The geographic themes of Movement and Region prove that geography is destiny in Western Africa because Africa does not have the resources and the technology to cure sick people and live long, full lives.
Movement: The movement theme of geography shows that diseases are spreading uncontrollably in West Africa. Africa is unable to control the spreading of Ebola and prevent it from affecting other people. In Africa right now Ebola is affecting hundreds of people and nobody can do anything to stop it.

According to the New York Times article, America needs to help stop Ebola because Africa doesn’t have the hospitals to do this. People are being flown from Africa to Atlanta to receive proper health care. Geography is destiny because where you are born, you cannot change. If someone was born in an area with a disease spreading, one individual can do nothing to stop it. If your location does not have the resources to give proper health care, then you’re not going to receive proper health care sadly which leads to death.

Region: The Region theme of geography shows that where you are located on the map decides what resources you are able to receive. In certain parts of the world water is less accessible which causes dehydration and less crops to grow for food. According to the New York Times article it mentioned how Africa doesn’t have the technology to do solid research, they cannot find cures and treatments on their own. With that said, this shows that geography is destiny because if you’re country is not physically able to access the internet or water, that is not your fault but in the long run could still potentially harm your life/health. According to the article, Africa does not have healthy, safe place for the people with the disease to go to make sure they do not spread the virus.
Conclusion:Therefore this proves that geography is destiny because you can’t change what is happening all around you. One person can only do so much to help the country you live in. Thousands of people die from not getting enough water in Africa and I guarantee those people would change that fact if they could.

I agree with you, in that, the geography does effect the ability that the citizens have to fight the virus. However, you say that they are alone and the U.S. can not do much to aide them. I disagree with this due to the fact that this outbreak is a genuine concern to the U.S.. I believe that we, as a Country, will do everything we can to help them out of fear and concern. The water situation will be an issue that will come in to play once Africa gets the necessary supplies to be a threat to this disease, as of now Africa is already making lockdowns effective in towns such as Sierra Leone.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I agree with your comment, but the United States should not need to be responsible for the well being of Africa. Yes, we can do everything in our power to help, but we cannot always be there for them.
