Compare & Contrast: Judaism, Christianity, Islam

In a well developed paragraph, using evidence from Primary Sources in Judaism, Christianity & Islam, identify similarities and or differences between the religions. Post your paragraph as a comment to this blog post.

  1. Thesis: The 3 religions have the same kind of morality in which, they need to believe in their god, and only him.


    As shown in the Torah: “I command you to have YHVH your god.” This shows that it is similar to Christianity because in extract in the nicene creed it states:” We believe in one God.” And also similar to the Muslim’s because in the extract of the Quran it says: “ Allah bears witness that there is no god but him.” So, all of these 3 quotes extracted from the texts show that they are all similar in the way that they can only believe in 1 god and no one else.

  2. Thesis:They are different because of the places to go to worship and what they believe in is different among these three religions.

    Prayer and worship is different throughout these religions. They are different because in the Torah, in line 18, it is saying love god, Same for the Bible and Quran, in the Bible, it says to love Jesus and his father, but in the Quran it says to fear and love god. The Quran shows Muslims how to pray and tells them to do a pilgrimage. This shows that prayer and worship is different because these religions pray and worship in different ways, Jews go to Synagogues, Christians go to Church, and Muslims go to Mosques.

  3. Thesis: God will help make his followers’ era of life fill with peace in all three religions if they follow the rules of the religion.

    Reflection: Prayer/worship is similar in all 3 religions because all three religions believe in only one God that will take care of them. For example in lines 80-87 of the Quran, line 3 of the Torah, and line 59 from the Nicene Creed all state the fact that if you follow the religion’s rules then the God will grant you with a life of peace. All religions also have a sacred book. Judaism has the Torah, Christianity has the Bible, and Islam has the Quran. These books are what the religion followers’ read commit to. This shows that all three religions pray and worship their God in similar ways only with different beliefs and Gods. All religions have a sacred book, a sacred place, and sacred beliefs that they find more or less important than other religions.

  4. All three religions are similar in morality because they believe in one God but differ because Judaism focuses on what is morally wrong while Islam focuses on what is morally right.

    Morality is similar in all three religions because each says that we will worship one God. In the Jewish Torah, it says on line 15, “I am the Lord your God You shall not recognize the Gods of others in my presence.” All of the other three religions’ passages also say something similar to this regarding the worshiping of one God making all the religions similar. But, Judaism and Islam differ in morality because their views on what is morally important are different. In the Jewish Torah on lines 20-22 it says, “You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal.” These are all examples of what is thought to be morally wrong where Islam focuses on what is morally right. On lines 90-91 of the Muslim Quran it says, “You shall give the due alms to the relatives, the needy, the poor..” and this is stating what is morally right. Therefore, Judaism and Islam differ in morality because one focuses on what is wrong while the other focuses on what is right.

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all different because they all worship in different ways, for example each religion has their own holy book, The Torah(Judaism), The Bible (Christianity), and The Koran (Islam). Worship is different in Islam than it is in Judaism and Christianity because Have to pray in a certain way, in a certain direction, and at certain times. In the reading about islam it states “and bow down your heads with those who bow in worship turn thy face towards the inviolable place of worship” (Lines 80 & 81). This indicates that muslims have to pray in a certain way and a certain direction. As a Christian I have found I pray once a day but I pray in whichever way is convenient, I don’t pray in the direction of Jerusalem and neither do Jews. So this shows they worship differently because Muslims are confined to a certain way of praying and they must pray in the direction of Mecca.

    Thesis

    All religions are similar because they believe in their own god and believe that their god is the only god. They all worship and pray towards their god.


    Gods role is similar in each religion because in each religion they all have similar views on their own god. Judaism worships the god Yah-Weh, Christians worship the god Jesus Christ, and Muslims worships the god Allah (9). God's role in Judaism is to love your god and to walk in his way and to keep his commandments (3-5). God’s role in Christianity is to believe in one god and the only son of god and to worship him (35-47). God’s role in Islam is to believe in no god but Allah (70-72). This is all similar because all religions believe in their own one god and they all worship him and are faithful.

    Islam, Christianity, and Judaism’s religions affect their followers actions by what their god’s view have been.All the religions are similar and different. They are similar because they are all monothestic, gods role in their lives is huge, they each worship their god, have sacred places related to their god. and have sacred prayers to their god. on line 12 it says YHVH your god is the god of gods and master of masters. this shows another similarity between the religions, they are all monothestic.The reason why they are different is because they all believe in different gods, their morals differ; for example judaism has the 10 commandments stated on lines 14 to 24 and islam has the 5 pillars which are stated on lines 69 - 118.

  8. In all three religions they are told to pray multiple times a day, and all three religions also believe in only one God. Morality is similar in Christianity and Judaism because they believed that the same things are wrong. God’s Role in each religion is different because of the beliefs that each religion has. In Judaism the God will bless you if you follow his commandments and his teachings. In Islam their morality is shown in the 5 pillars of Islam. The 5 pillars tell them what they should do as a muslim.

  9. Something different about Judaism, Christianity, and Islam’s views on morality is the level they enforce it on. Each religion has their own morals, but they each enforce it in different ways. Morality is different in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam because of the levels they take it. In lines 16-24,Judaism’s morals were laying down the law saying it very clear, “Honor your father and your mother, You shall not murder…” If you would break the morals in Judaism, the people would break their covenant with God and make it less of a strong relationship with god. This is different from Christianity because Christianity didn’t have morals that were crisp and clear in the Nicene Creed. It was not as clear because it didn’t say exactly what the morals were, like Judaism did. I’s morals were stated that you should pray, give charity, and make a pilgrimage, and all of the five pillars. They were not as clear as Judaism’s morals, but not as light as C’s. They were still there though, just not as flat out.

  10. These religions are similar because they all believe in one God. The Quran, The Bible, and The Torah, all say that in order to be a good person with a meaningful life, you must follow the rules/commandments of God.

    In all of the religions, God determines what is good and bad. The religions are similar because they all have places you can go to worship. Jews have Temple, Christians have Church, and Muslims have Mosque. All places encourage the followers of that religion to live a safe and meaningful life. For example, in the first pillar for Islam it states that you should, “Help the needy and the poor”. In the bible for Christianity, it says how we believe in Jesus Christ. In The Torah for Judaism, it states that there is one God and not to do bad things like steal and murder.

  11. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have similar views on worshiping their only 1 God with honor and prayer. For example, in the Judaism’s Torah on line 2, it states “You shall not recognize the gods of others in my presence”. This means you should not think or even believe in any other God, but the one you are praying to. In the Christian Nicene Creed, it says “We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, the maker of heaven and Earth”. This is interpreted by you believing in one God that contains three people (the Father, the Son, and the maker of heaven and earth). Lastly, the Islam’s Quran has 5 pillars that Muslims should follow. In the first pillar on line 71, it says that “there is no God but him”. All three of these religious have the same theme, which is to worship only 1 God. The differences is the way the theme is stated in the religious books are worded differently, and there are different actions to how you can worship your God, depending on what religion you are.

    Thesis: In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam god’s role is similar because all of their gods expect certain things out of them.


    Among the three religions Islam, Judaism, and Christianity the followers of these religions have certain things god expects from them. For example in The Nicene Creed which many christians accept, God expects them to believe that that Jesus is the only son of god and that he was crucified and resurrected[Lines 39, 40, 51, 52, 53] Being a christian, I have been told that belief in Jesus is what you need to do to be accepted into heaven. In Judaism the Torah gives a set of commandments[Lines 15-24] in which jews cannot do, this is what god expects of the jews similar to what the christian gods expect of christians. Lastly in Islam Allah expects muslims to follow the 5 pillars, for example the third pillar is giving charity to the the needy[Lines 90-91] . This shows that God’s role is similar in all three religions because all of their gods have expectations for his people.

    Reflection Essay

    Thesis:
    God’s role in the world is similar for all three religions because it is stated in each passage that God’s followers are not allowed to follow any other God, therefore all followers’ worlds revolve around one God.

    Morality is similar in Judaism and Christianity because of The Ten Commandments, which is in The Torah, and The Nicene Creed, which is in The Bible. For example in line 2, The Ten Commandments states “You shall not recognize the gods of others in My presence,” and in line 35, The Nicene Creed states “We believe in one God.” Therefore, both religions are similar because both are expected to only believe in one God. This is similar to Islam because in line 70, the 1st Pillar says, “Allah bears witness that there is no God but Him.” This shows that all three religions state that it is morally wrong to believe in more than one God. Islam is different from Judaism and Christianity because there are specific rules to follow through before someone prays. An example is in line 82, the 2nd Pillar, which states “When ye rise up for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands up to your elbows…” (etc.). Instructions as found in the 2nd Pillar are not even mentioned in the Judaism or Christianity pieces. Therefore the Islam religion is different from the other religions because Muslims must cleanse themselves before praying. Overall the Judaism, Christianity, and Islam religions are alike and different in many ways.

  14. Although Islam specifically describes when and how to pray, Christianity focuses mainly on how and Judaism on when. Overall the similarities between the ways in which these three religions incorporate prayer and worship rituals vastly outnumber the differences that can be observed. Prayer and worship’s role is similar in Judaism and Islam because it specifically tells when a follower of the religion should pray. For example, the excerpt from the Torah says, “Remember the day of shabbat to keep it holy,” and the 2nd pillar in the Quran describes that it is necessary to pray at least five times a day, Both excerpts show that there is a more exact or stricter time to pray in Judaism and Islam than in Christianity which doesn’t specifically specify a time of pray. Furthermore, prayer and worship’s role is also similar between Islam and Christianity because both tell physically how to pray in order to receive a good result from God. In the Nicene Creed, it states, “We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.” Also, the 2nd pillar in the Quran describes to pray by bowing and turning “towards the inviolable place of worship,” and the 5th pillar tells Muslims to make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca that God will be aware of. Being baptized, the Hajj pilgrimage, and praying towards Mecca all describe physical actions of prayer or worship that are performed in order to receive something in return from God.

  15. Islam and Judaism have similar views on morality because their holy books both talk about what they should and should’nt do. Morality is similar in Judaism and Islam because an excerpt from the Torah and Quran both state that you cannot commit crimes. For example the Torah says you cannot commit an act of theft. This is similar to Islam because the Quran says you cannot steal.Another similarity of the morality of these religions is that an excerpt from the Quran states that Muslims must fast during Ramadan. This is similar to how an excerpt from the Torah states Jews must celebrate the holiday Hanukkah, and how they must celebrate it. These are both alike because their both holy holidays for their religions.

  16. God’s role is similar to each person’s life because the Holy Book for each religion usually states how they worship, when, and where.
    One being that they all, (people who follow Him), must worship in a certain way, or where and when. For example, the Quran states “Establish worship at the two ends of the day and some watches of the night [...] (17:78) Establish worship at the going down of the sun(sunset) until the dark of night, and (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn. Lo! (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn is ever witnessed”. This shows how and when they must pray each day. Christianity also states, “We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins” (64 of the Nicene Creed). This tells us that they must know of the baptism for forgiving of sins. The Torah states who they must pray to. “... I command you today to love YHVH your God and to walk in HIs ways and to keep His commandments…” (3 from the Torah). This shows how they must act and how they worship. They are also different because no religion will be lived in the same way as another. For example, no other religion prays the same as Islam/Muslims do. Others do not have worships so many times a day with such strict rules, as to Muslims pray towards their Holy City, while others do not. These excerpts from each religion’s Holy Book shows how they are similar or different to each other.

  17. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all similar because they worship one god and have similar ways of worshiping their God.
    Prayer and worship is similar in the three major monotheistic religions because in all three they worship and praise one god. For example, in the 1st Pillar of the Quran, the muslims say “There is not God but Him”, and the Jews say in the Torah that “God is the supreme being and there is none besides him”. This shows that both religions worship God with the belief that he is the only God in the universe. In addition, all three religions have a holy book that they abide by. The Christians have the Bible, the Jews have the Torah, and the Muslims have the Quran. Also, all three monotheistic religions worship in a sacred place. Islamic followers worship in a Mosque, Christians pray in a Church, and Jews go to a Synagogue. This shows that they are similar because everybody that practices one of those three religions visit a sacred place to worship their God.

  18. There are many religions in this world. They are a few that are more popular than others. But they all have their differences. Judaism talks about how God will reward you for following God. Christianity talks about God and him judging how we live our lives so that we can find his salvation . Islam says that their God will know of everything that you do.

    In the religions said in the text have differences about how God plays a role in your life. Lines 4-5 talk about what happens if you decide to follow God.. In Judaism, you are blessed into a land of God and taken as possession. Christianity differs from Judaism from having how God plays a role and matters in the first place. Lines 57-65 talk about how God will be your salvation but you must live a morally good life since God will judge you. For Islam, line 116 says that God is fully aware of your actions and you must be careful of what you do.

  19. The three religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam share many similarities and differences that make each one unique. For example, Christianity and Judaism both abide by the same rule set engraved on the stone of holy tablets known as the “Ten Commandments.” However, Islam does not follow these rules, instead they rely on what is known as “The Five Pillars of Islam” to guide them through what is right and what is wrong. Next, all three of the religions engage in some type of prayer directed towards their god. While Christians and Jews fold their hands together to pray to their god Jesus Christ,as is stated in the Bible, Muslims typically pray by bowing down to their god Allah stated in the Quran. Thirdly, Jews and Muslims both engage in food restrictions, for Jews they are only allowed to consume select foods known as Kosher. Muslims, follow a food restriction known as Halal that not only restricts the type of food they eat but also how it is prepared. While Jews and Muslims engage in food restrictions Christians do not, however their is a restriction on eating meat on a holy day known as “Good Friday.” Lastly, All three religions follow the teachings of a special holy text or book. For Christians that holy book is known as the Bible which is made up of many books that contain the word of god. For Jews the holy book is the Torah which is the old testament from the Christian book the Bible. For Muslims the holy text is the Quran, the Quran is the teachings from the prophets of their god Allah. All in all, these three religions share a lot of the same traits and characteristics, while many differences make them unique.

  20. Thesis: All three of these religions have similar viewpoints on morality according to the 5 pillars of Islam, the 10 commandments of Judaism, and the Nicene Creed of Christianity


    They all have certain things in their religious texts or just in basic principals for the religion that state morally correct things that they should do (according to the religion). The religion of Islam has the 5 pillars, but most specifically in the third pillar. The third pillar states, “you shall give the due alms to the relatives, the needy, the poor, and the traveling alien”. This is stating that you should help out people in need because it is the right thing to do. For Judaism, they have the 10 commandments but more specifically commandments 6, 7, and 8. Those say that you shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, and that you shall not steal. Although it isn’t saying that you should give to the needy it is still stating basic morality rules similar to Islam. For Christianity, The Nicene Creed states “ We acknowledge one baptism for our sins”. What this means is that if you believe in Jesus and get baptised you will be forgiven of all the immoral things that they have done and look forward to, “ the life of the world to come”. They are all alike in their own ways but still all symbolize morality.

In an excerpt from the Torah, in Judaism, it says, “...I command you today to love YHVH your God and to walk in His ways and keep His commandments…”(line 3). In the Nicene Creed, it similarly says, “We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the father”(lines 39-41). As well as the Quaran says, “Allah bears witness that there is no God but Him”(line 70). They are all similar because of their commitment to their one particular God.

    Worship is similar in Judaism, Christianity and Islam because all believe in very similar “Laws” to follow. For example, Jews believe, “You shall not recognize the gods of others in my presence” according to the ten commandments. This shows that jews can only believe in one god and that is their own. Christians believe the phrase, “we believe in one god” according to the Nicene Creed. This shows that they think one god created everything. Muslims believe, “Allah bears witness that there is no god but him” according to the first Pillar of the Quran. All of this shows that all religions worship very similarly in their one god.

    Muslims, Jews, and Christians are all expected to worship and believe in on God. In an excerpt from the Torah, it is stated that, “YHVH your God is the God of all gods and the Master of masters”, where as in the Quran, it is stated that, “Allah bears witness that there is no God but Him,”. These both infer that in order to be accepted by their God, they must only worship and pay no attention to any other God but Him. Also, in Christianity, The Nicene Creed states, “...Believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,”. This goes along with the views of Jews and Muslims on morality, by determining what is right and wrong. From the sections of each religions holy books, their views on what is accepted and what is not are clearly similar.

  24. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all similar because of God’s role in the people’s lives. For example in the religion of Judaism, the first of the ten commandments states, “I am the lord, your God”. This is saying, I am your one God, your one savior. Similarly in the religion of Christianity, it states, We believe in one God”(line 35). This is exactly what is represented in the first of the ten commandments in Judaism. These similarities show the similarities of the above religions. This quote is the first line of the Nicene Creed. Lastly, in the religion of Islam, it states, “...there is no God but him…”(line 71). In this statement, “Him” refers to Allah, the God of the muslims. This line is involved with this first pillar of Islam. To conclude, all three religions believe in one God, and one God only, in which they all worship.

  25. These three religions are similar because they all pray to their God, but are different because each worships in different ways. These differences are what makes each religion unique.
    In all three religion texts, each religion has specific ways of prayer and worship, but many similarities can be found within the 3 religions prayer methods. In the Judaism text on line 18, the 4th commandment is to remind Jews to keep it holy on the day of the Shabbat. This is an example of prayer for the Jews showing how they pray on certain days. For Christians, the passage states on line 64 “who with the father and the son is worshiped and glorified.” This passage shows who and how they worship. Lastly, the Muslims worship in a similar way as both these religions. In the second pillar, the author states “..and bow your head down with those who bow in worship,” and “..turn they face towards the holy city.” These examples of how Muslims pray are similar to the other 2 religions because each talks about praying to their one good, like the Muslims. So, these religions similarities are by who they pray too, but have different ways of practicing.

    In the extract from the Torah it sites:” I command you today to love YHVH your god.” It is similar to Christianity because it says in the short extract of the Nicene Creed:” We believe in one god” which shows that they also worship only one god. It is also similar to the Muslim’s because in the Quran it states:” Allah bears witness that there is no god but him.” All of the three short text show that they all have the same kind of Morality in which, they can only believe in their god and nobody else.

  27. The Arabs should obtain the majority of the land because they were promised the land, and they were their first and had no place to go. According to the British White Paper, published in 1939, the Arabs were assured they would get Palestine by the Ottaman Empire after world war one.(Doc. D) This shows that the Arabs did something to earn the land, and they were promised they could live there. Since this article came from a British paper we should consider this document to be reliable because they didn’t have a bias for the Arabs or the Jews. According to this excerpt from The Lemon Tree by a Palestinian, Bashir, who was visiting his old home before they were exiled by the Jews said that “we were exiled but we left our souls, our hopes, and our childhood in Palestine… we left them in the remains of our fathers and ancesstors. (Doc. E) This excerpt shows that the Arabs lived in Palestine for a while, and it was their homeland because the excerpt talked about keeping their souls, and anscesstors in Palestine. When looking at this document we should take caution because it was from an Arab, and they can be overexagerating.



    Document D and E compare and contrast in many ways. One way they contrast is they both have completely different point of views or authors. One document is from a European, and the other is from a Palestinian. Another way they contrast is one is a formal document that is very business like saying it’s Palestines land,and the other is very dramatic and emotional saying it’s the Palestinians home. So they compare because they are both arguing the same thing. Also the authors want the same thing, and want to end conflict.

    A document that could strengthen my article a lot is if I had an article of a Jew saying it was wrong for Israel to take Palestines land, and it was home for the Palestinians. This document would help my argument because if a Jew admitted it was wrong it would show no favoritism, and their making their own people look bad.

  28. For hundreds of years, the Israeli Jews and the Palestinian Arabs have fought over control of the rights to the land between Egypt and Syria. Over the years control of this land has changed back and forth between Israel and Palestine. Although both nations want it for different reasons, Israel should have control of the land. Israel should have the land for multiple reasons a few being that the the Jews were promised the land, and that they would be willing to share the land with the Palestinian Arabs who have called the place their home for years.The first reason the Jews should have the land is because it was promised to them by their god as stated in the Bible. “The whole land of Canaan where you are now alien. I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you, (Document A). This shows that the Jews were actually promised this by their god, and it is hard to not give them the land that was promised them for religious purposes. The second reason the Jews should have the land is because the land was also promised to them in a letter from Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild known as the “Balfour Declaration.” Balfour stated, “His Majesty’s Government view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country”, (Document C). This shows yet another instance in which the Jews were promised the land. All in all, the Israeli Jews should be allowed the land because it was promised to them not only by their god but also by the British.
