SUMMARY: Turtle populations have came back strong in Florida beaches. After the early 2000’s turtle population went from almost 60,000 to just 30,000, but now they are coming back. Scientists do not have an explanation why the turtle population is going up and down, but they do believe that precautions Floridians have taken are giving sea turtles a greater chance at survival. By taking turtle meat off menus, turning man made lights off on beaches, and large fishing companies watching out for them, Sea Turtles will not go extinct.
ANALYSIS: I think the reason that Sea Turtles make a lot of nests one year then barely any the next is because their long lifespan does not demand them to breed immediately. Turtles live to about 100 years on average so they do not have to breed every year. I do not think they find it necessary to be breeding every year but they are aware that they need to. I also think the precautions humans have started to make will keep the turtle population healthy in Florida.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Why do you think Turtles have a Yo-Yo like breeding pattern?
Do you think humans were responsible for the original plummet of Sea Turtles?
What would you do if you lived in Florida to protect Turtles?

If I lived in Florida, I would not eat Turtle meat as to not endanger the species. If everybody stopped eating turtle meat then there would be no purpose to kill them, therefore the population of Sea Turtles would go up and out of the endangered species.
ReplyDeleteI think humans were and are responsible for the original plummet of sea turtles because there is proof of harm to these sea turtles and other marine organisms. This harm is known as ocean acidification. This is term is highlighted the high levels of acid caused an abundance of carbon floating around in the Earths atmosphere. This carbon is created from the cars we drive.
ReplyDeleteI do think that humans were responsible for the original plummet of sea turtles because before we were aware of the sea turtle problem, we were not taking ant precautions to protect the sea turtles. Because of this, many actions that humans were doing such as eating turtle affected them negatively. If I lived in Florida, I would definitely not eat turtle meat in an effort to stop the killing of turtles and to protect them so they will stray away from being an endangered species.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the turtles yo-yo like pattern for population is due to human interaction with the enviornment. Scientist do not know the underlying cause just yet, but our interaction with these turtles has to have something to do with it.
ReplyDeleteI do think humans were responsible for the original plummet of Sea Turtles because we put them in places where they are endangered. Light tower lights shine too bright for the turtles causing them to lose their population. Also hunting for them and putting them on restaurant menus causes them to be more endangered because they are being killed.
ReplyDeletePeople are responsible for sea turtle population plummeting. We need to help protect them so their species will never become extinct. Humans shouldn't eat turtle meat because that animal doesn't deserve to die and they should be preserved. Everyone needs to stop eating their meat because that is a big cause of their population plummeting.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with your statement on the"Yo-Yo" like breeding patterns. Every single female human isn't breeding every year so why should the sea turtles have to? It is good if they do though because the more they breed, the quicker their population will grow.
ReplyDeleteI think that humans have a huge impact on the original plummet of sea turtles because were weren't taking into consideration the effect we have on their species. Instead of making sure the turtle eggs were safe from predators, we acted as if they were our pets when all we were doing was killing them.
