SUMMERY:
In the article, "Vatican Installing Showers for Homeless" published by Associated Press on November 13 2014, we learn that Monsignor Konrad Krajewski, the pope's chief alms-giver, is installing showers in public bathrooms to cater to the homeless. He came up with this idea after meeting with a homeless man named Franco, who he offered to take out for dinner when he realized it was his 50th birthday, but Franco declined because of his "awful stench". According to La Stampa's Vatican Insider website, Krajewski took Franco anyways, and learned that although there are many places to find something to eat throughout Rome, there is no place to wash yourself. The office of Monsignor Konrad Krajewiski has been receiving many complaints about their use of money. They responded by informing the shopkeepers and artisans that starting January 1, the Vatican is reserving the business for itself, to better fund his charitable efforts.

ANALYSIS:
I was really shocked when I read this article for the first time, because I didn't realize how much personal hygiene meant to the homeless. My impression was that they wanted nothing more than food or a place to sleep, not how clean they were. But now that I think about it, I understand why their personal hygiene matters so much, because they are constantly in the public, and it must be somewhat embarrassing to have everyone look at you like an animal that needs a bath. I think it's great what Krajewski is doing, even though business people are complaining, they need to understand how big of an issue we have with homeless people throughout the country.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. Do you agree with how Krajewski is spending their money?
2. Do you think he is spending to much of the country's funds on charitable efforts?
3. Do you really believe that his plan to install showers in public bathrooms will make a difference?

  1. Yes I agree with Krajewski's plan on spending money because the homeless struggle everyday with personal hygiene. It also affects their health so I agree with Krajewski. I think his plan to install showers in public bathrooms will make a difference too because then the homeless can take a shower whenever they want without worrying about being dirty.

  2. Yes, I think that hygiene is just as important as anything else. They sit on the streets sometimes looking filthy, and I can't imagine how they feel when hundreds of people walk past them. They are still people and I think providing them with showers is a good idea. Having good hygiene could make a difference in their lives because if they have a better appearance then more money might me given to them and with that money hopefully they spend it wisely. Homelessness is a serious situation and I think whatever this country can do to help it we should at least try it.

  3. I think that them spending their money on public bathrooms for the homeless is a good idea and that it will be very beneficial. Those who are homeless really do have no access to bathe themselves and make themselves clean. And since they are not clean and have poor personal hygeine, people might find them scary and not go up to them to give money due to their fear. So therefore, adding public showers will benefit the poor because it may give them a better chance at gaining money from those who are willing to donate and help them out.

  4. I think installing showers for them is important because they need to stay healthy and clean. He is spending too much money for charitable efforts, but it is a good thing and he should continue support them, but should not be spending too much.

  5. Spending money to help the homeless is a great idea. If I ddin't have a place to live I would appreciate others putting in showers. No one wants to smell bad because it is gross and embarrasing. They are using the money well and need to continue to help homeless people to make life a little bit easier for them.

  6. I really do think that putting the showers in will make a difference. I too did not realize that they care about how they smell and the fact that he refused to go to dinner made a very strong point. I'm sure these showers will boost homeless people's confidence.

  7. I agree with Krajewski's plan to spend his money on showers because being clean is a necessity. Homeless people don't get the resources or place to bathe as we do like at home. Making these showers will help lots of homeless people because if you are constantly walking around dirty, people might get a bad impression on you and might not help you. This plan will be very beneficial.

  8. I think that installing showers is a very good use of money to help the homeless because it is very beneficial, to them so that they stay healthy. This will help many homeless people stay healthy and clean. i think that they were right to ask homeless people what they could do to help them because that is how what they do will more effective. I also think that they should set up showers not only in rome but all around the world
