Who should have majority rights to Israel/Palestine--Jews or Arabs?

  1. Jew should have the majority of Israel and Palestine because Palestine was their “ever-memorable home”. According to “The Jewish State”, by Theodore Herzl, 1896, Palestine was the home of the Jews (Document B). The author’s identity as an Austrian Jew suggests that he is saying this because he is biased and just wants to help his religion. This shows that Herzl might be trying to talk bad about the Arabs just because he wants to help his religion, he might not be choosing to side with the Jews because of who he truly feels should have the majority. According to the Balfour Declaration, they were in favor of making Palestine a national home for the Jewish people (Document C). The author’s identity as a British person suggests that they want Jews to be in their holy place. This shows that this source is reliable because he is a foreigner to both Israelis and Palestinians.

  2. Despite the reason about the Arab’s feeling empowered, the Jews should control most of Israel/Palestine because God told the Jews that they would be strong in their covenant and they would help regulate finances in Turkey. In the document The Jewish State, on lines 18-19, it explains that if the Jews were to be given Palestine, they would repay the favor by helping control Turkeys finances (Doc. B). This means that if they are given Palestine, they would repay the favor by helping Turkey. This source is not 100% reliable because since it was coming from the Jews, they could have over exaggerated it. They could have lied to prove a point. Another reason Jews should get most of Palestine and not Arabs is because on lines 5-6 in the document The Bible, Genesis 17: 3-8, it shows God telling Abraham that he will own many nations and be the father of them (Doc. B). This proves that even their own God told them they would rule many nations, therefore they should get most of Palestine. This source is very reliable because what God said is in their covenant, but it can be interpreted in different ways if there are different religions looking at it. What he said is in the text and can not be changed, therefore it is reliable.

  3. The Arabs and Jews fought over the land in the Israel and Palestine and the Jews deserve for they fought and died for that land. Jews also defended their land from multiple Arab nations. This quotation was said by a Palestinian. “We were exiled by force of arms” (Document E). Since the author was Palestinian, we can assume that the source is biased. Since he was exiled, he must have some hatred toward Israel. Israel acquired that land through force and that is earned. They aren’t going to give up land they spilled blood for. The Israeli control over the Palestinian is well documented. This map of Israel and its territories shows land that either the UN gave them or earned through a war. This shows that land was either given or fought for by Jews. This document is more reliable since it’s in a US textbook covering what happened in Israel. The Israelis fought and bled for their territories against Palestine and other Arab nations, they deserve that land.

  7. The Arabs should have the majority control over Palestine because it was their land originally and it was unfairly taken from them, putting Arabs in a harsh situation. First, The British White Paper wrote in 1939 that Palestine becoming a Jewish state was not in the Mandate and that the conversion of Palestine to a Jewish State would be against Arabs will (Doc D). This proves that when the Jews took the Arabs land it was without permission by law or by the people already living in Palestine. This was most likely written by a European who worked for The British White Paper in 1939. This affects how we analyze the data because the author’s country may be allies with the Arabs, and therefore may have exaggerated the Arabs’ innocence. However, this document is from a newspaper which is relied on to tell the truth and share Britain’s point of view on the situation. Next, an excerpt from Lemon Tree states how Arabs were exiled by force and on foot, leaving everything they knew and loved behind (Doc E). This shows how harshly the Arabs’ land was taken away from them and also how their loss of land had everlasting negative effects on their life. Lemon Tree was written by Sandy Tolan, but this excerpt was written from the point of view of Bashir, a Palestinian who is talking to a Jew who now lives in his old home in 1948. One must be skeptical when analyzing this document because Bashir may be exaggerating in order to express the struggles Jews put Arabs through.

  8. Despite Arabs claiming that turning Palestine into a Jewish state would be against their will, Jews should have control over the majority of Israel and Palestine because their religious book along with foreign governments favor Palestine becoming Jewish ruled territory. The Bible, Genesis 17:3-8, states that, “The land of Canaan where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;” (Doc A). This source is an excerpt from the bible which makes this source somewhat unreliable due to the controversy of the truth behind the bible. But even though this source is less reliable, it still shows that in the Jewish religion, God promised them possession of that land. Therefore, Jews should have the majority of control over Israel and Palestine. Also, in the “Balfour Declaration,” 1917, Arthur James Balfour said, “His majesty’s Government view with favor the home for the Jewish people” (Doc C). This source can be considered more reliable than Document A due to its purpose which was to inform the Zionist Federation of Lord Rothschild’s agreement of Jews controlling Palestine. Therefore, this document shows that even Lord Rothschild agrees that Jews should control Palestine making it clear that Jews should have control over the majority of Israel and Palestine.

  10. The Jews should control the majority of Israel/Palestine because Jews were forced out of Palestine, their homeland, and were once promised Palestine on behalf of the British. Sandy Tolan stated that the Jews were exiled from Palestine and clearly states how they left their souls and childhoods there (Doc. E). The fact that Tolan was a Palestinian and was just visiting his family, proves that he was a bystander of the crisis that was occurring. Since he was not apart of the event we can infer that Tolan is simply stating facts and and the document is not biased. Arthur James Balfour acknowledges that the British wrote a letter confirming that Palestine is a national home to the Jewish people (Doc. C). The fact that Balfour is a British Foreign Secretary proves that he was simply restating the Government’s orders. Since he is British and not apart of the conflict, we can infer that Balfour is writing truthfully and is not biased. Overall the Jewish people should control most of Israel/Palestine because it was/is rightfully theirs.

  11. The Jews should have the majority of the rights to Palestine because the British government promised them the land so by law it is theirs, and they were they before anybody else. The Jewish State, written by Theodore Herzl in 1896, states that Palestine is the Jewish home and would attract countless amounts of Jews there. (Doc B). This shows that Jews believe that Palestine is their true home and they love the location with all of their heart. They consider it their historic home and they are the people who belong there. However, Theodore Hertz’s position as a Jew affects how we analyze the document because he may have exaggerated or stretched the truth to persuade the public that Palestine should belong to the Jews, which results in caution to be exhibited by the reader while interpreting the document. In addition, the Delfour Declaration states that the Government and the King of Britain agree that Palestine is the national home for Jewish people. (Doc C) This document is more reliable than Document B because the letter was written by the British Foreign Secretary Arthur James, who was neither a Jew nor an Arab so he had no stance in the conflict. I believe this proves that Jews should be awarded the majority of the rights to Palestine because a government official with an unbiased view thought that the Jews should get it. If an educated person of importance elects to award land to particular party then that should be taken into serious consideration as to who should get the land. Based off of these documents, to me it is clear that the majority of Palestine should be awarded to the Jewish people.

  13. Arabs should have majority control of the land of Israel/ Palestine because they needed more resources to survive and the British reversed their policies. The Extract, from the British White Paper, written on May 17, 1939, states that the British changed their minds about the Balfour Declaration as they now are willing to give the land to the Arabs (Document D). The author’s identity as a British paper affects how we should analyze this document because the British promised the Arabs that they would help them win over the Jews. This is somewhat reliable as it only tells how the British viewed the Arabs as the other people might have different opinions. This demonstrates that the Balfour Declaration was meant to promise Jews the land, but then the British changed their mind to give Arabs the land as the document specifically says “could not have intended the Palestine should be converted into a Jewish State”. In another extract from the Lemon Tree, written by journalist Sandy Tolan in Bloomsbury 2007, explains how poor the Arabs are as they use nature as their home and resources (Document E). The author’s purpose for writing the article was to persuade readers to give the Arabs their land back as he speaks in sorrow. As a result, this is partially reliable as he may be biased and only tells his perspective and not anyone else's. This shows that the Arabs need the land because many people are miserable because they have no shelter or food to provide for themselves.

  14. Jews should be the one’s who should have the rights over the land of Israel and Palestine because the Jews lived there before the Arabs and Gold told the Jews he would give them an everlasting possession of the land. . The Jewish State, published in 1896, states that these lands are the homelands for the Jews (document B). This author was an Australian Jewish journalist, so this might affect how we interpret this document because since the author was Jewish he might of wanted it seem like Jews should surely have the land.So since these lands are supposed to be the homeland of the Jews and Palestine is the Jews ever- memorable historic home from document B, the Jews should defiantly be the ones who have control over the land.

  15. The Jews should have the majority control because it’s their historic home and because they already had a declaration of sympathy, meaning that whoever wrote it believed that the Jews should own and control the land. In “The Jewish State”, written by Theodore Herzl in 1896 states, “Palestine is our ever memorable historic home” (Document B). The author’s identity as an Austrian Jewish journalist affects how we view this document because he is/was a Jewish man, making is less reliable because he may have been biased. This shows that although he may have been biased, he had stated that the Jews had lived there before and had control of the land before the Arabs came, instead of saying something like, I believe this because that… In a letter written by Arthur James Balfour in 1917 states that, “...declaration of sympathy with Jewish zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by, the Cabinet”(Document C). The document is more reliable because Balfour had been writing to a Lord, so he probably wanted to make it as real as possible. Because Document C is more reliable, the reader would have to go into greater depths with it to prove that he wasn’t biased. The reader should be cautious, because although Balfour had been writing to a Lord, he may have made it biased so he would lean towards them.

  16. The Jews deserve the rights over the land of Israel and Palestine because they suffered for centuries, and receiving the land would be the symbol of everything Jews were put through, all that they suffered after eighteen centuries, and a new nation that their God would look over. In an excerpt from The Jewish State, written by Theodore Herzl, an Austrailian Jewish journalist who founded modern political Zionism, it is stated that, “Palestine is our ever-memorable historic home” (Document B). Although this document is less reliable because the author has a bias opinion during 1896, he has many good points. Because of the fact that Theodore Herzl is a Jewish journalist, he could most likely be trying to make the Jews look better than the Arabs. When he explains how Palestine is the Jews memorable historic home, he could be trying to persuade bystanders that the Jews deserve it more than the Arabs, but he is right. This document helps prove how the followers of Judiasm deserve the rights over the land of Israel and Palestine by explaining how they have suffered there for centries, and receiving the land would mean everything they were put through was worth it.
According to an excerpt from The Bible, Genesis 17: 3-8, it is explained how their God, Abraham, was made to be a father of many nations. Because of the fact that this quote is from the Torah, it becomes a more reliable source by being a holy book. The excerpt from Genesis 17:5, helps prove how the Jews are deserving of this land because it explains how the Jews’ God, Abraham, is telling his followers that they are meant to be rulers of many nations. This means that Jews are able to take control of things because Abraham will be looking over them, helping them rule the nation of Israel and Palestine.

  17. Thesis: Jews should have rights over Israel and Palestine because it is their native lands, they had control of it first, so they should have the land.
Evidence: In the extract by the Jewish state, written by Theodore Herzl, an austrian Jew in 1846, states:” Palestine is our ever-memorable historic home (...) Palestine would attract our people.” ( DOC B).
POV: The identity of the author as an austrian jewish does affect how we interpret the document, because he is only in favor of his religion, and want the best for his religion and not the enemy
religion. We should be very cautious reading this article by not believing the entire thing.
Analysis: Even though Jews are not in a majority, they should still have the land because they have been there longer, and for them their god gave them this land. Which proves why Jews should control the land.

n2: According to Arthur James,a Palestinian and Israeli, Palestine and Israel, should be controlled by Jews because they deserve their homelands. (DOC C)
The author, Arthur James, known as a British Foreign Secretary, shows that this is reliable because we know that he is probably not a stupid person, that he is probably educated and very smart. And he is probably not for one side more than the other but more using common sense.
Jews have went thru very hard moments facing a lot of racist. They have had to deal with those judgements. For being thru all of this, Jews should live safely in their homelands.

  19. Thesis:Jews should have control over Israel and Palestine because they do not have a land that they can call their own, and they believe their god granted them that land.
Evidence:An extract from the bible, Genesis 17:3-8 states that god promised Abraham “Everlasting possession” of Canaan which is now known as Israel and Palestine. [Document A]
Pov:This document (The Torrah) was written approximately 3,000 years ago. This shows that we cannot trust the author because nobody could prove that god was really talking to him or is real. Abraham could have just wanted Canaan so he made something up to get it.
Analysis:Even though you cannot confirm that Jews were really promised this land, they still should have it because they believe it was a gift from god and taking it from them could be considered disrespecting their religion.
Evidence:According to Arthur James, Palestine and Israel should be given to jews because they deserve a homeland away from prejudice.[Document C]
Pov:Arthur James is the British foreign secretary which means that we should find what he is saying believable because he is educated and probably looked at both sides of the argument.
Analysis:Because of racial prejudices jews have had to deal with, they deserve Palestine and Israel as a safe homeland.
Now that we have seen what both Documents are addressing we can notice some differences and similarities. In the first place, obviously both Documents have proof that the Jews should have possession of Palestine and Israel, but not everything matches up between the two. For example, Document A was written thousands of years ago so it might not be as reliable, Document C on the other hand was written in 1917 still pretty long ago but the author definitely checked his sources because the letter was very official.

  20. The Israeli people should be able to stay in Israel because they were there first and god promised them that land. In the Bible, Genesis 17:3-8, God tells Abraham that the whole land of Canaan (Israel) is to be an “everlasting possession” to Abraham and his descendants after him (Document A). This is stating directly from the Jewish religious text that the land, their home Israel, is directly intended to be none but their land. Coming from an Arab standpoint they just wouldn’t care about what the Jewish god promised because they do not believe in that god, but it still gives the Jewish people probable cause to want to stay there. In an extract from The Jewish State Theodore Herzl writes “Palestine is our ever-memorable home” (Document B). Theodore Herzl is the founder of the modern political Zionism. What he has to say has a big impact on the Jewish community’s opinion. With all of the reasons for the Jews to stay, why would they ever want to leave?

  21. The Jews should have the rights to the land because it is stated in the Bible and the Jews left everything in Palestine before they were forced out, hoping to return. The bible says that the lord will give you (Jews) everlasting possession of the whole land of Cannan, and your descendants after you. (Doc A) I believe that the bible is a credible source for both Arabs and Jews because most of their religions were based off of it, making the evidence truthful to both sides. This evidence proves that the land was gifted to the Jews by God, not to the Arabs. Therefore, the Jews have priority over the land. Additionally, a Jewish journalist explains how they were kicked out of the land, but they left everything, hoping to return. (Doc E) However, Palestinians may argue that they built a life in the land then the Jews came and took it. This source may not be as reliable as the bible because it is only one person writing, but it still shows a valued perspective. The evidence does prove that the Jews rooted themselves in the holy land, and it would be unfair to take them out because their lives revolve around the things that they left.

  22. I think, the Arabs should possess the majority of the rights over the Palestinian region, instead of Israel because it was their home and their history, and belonged to their ancestors. This document was an summary of an extract from the Lemon Tree, written by Sandy Tolan, from a Palestinian, Bashir, who is visiting what was his families home, and currently being lived by a jewish family. This is my opinion, because the article states that the arabs as children grew up here, and that their children will grow up here. Also that they are not ready to give that up and just forgot about their childhood memories. (Document E). This document could be biased because his home was taken by imported jews. He could have hatred towards the jews and therefore, form a biased opinion. This means when reading this document, we should be cautious. These series of lines are explaining how Palestine is the Arabs home, and always was because this is where their ancestors expanded, and where their hearts will always be. Palestine will always be there home sweet home. Secondly, in lines 51 and 52 it states converting the Palestine country into a jewish state is the will of the Arabs and God. (Document D) This is explaining how the country of Palestine is not a Jewish state. This would be breaking the purposes of Palestine. This was an extract from the British White Paper. This could show a biased point of view because the British promised the Arabs independence from the Jews as part of the World War One policy. This means the British could be trying to gain followers of the opinion that the Arabs should have more control. This is because they had already promised the Arabs should have more control over the land. What this means for us as the readers is that, we need to be cautious. This is because a biased opinion may be present.

Thesis: Although the Jews think the land should be their own the Arabs should have the right of the land because it was their land first and foreign officals said it should be home of the Arabs.

Extract from Lemon Tree By Journalist Sandy Tolan, Bloomsburg, 2007 P. 207, states that Children’s hopes and dreams were left in palastine. (Doc. E)

The Author’s purpose for writing this document was to state not only the facts of how a Palestinain, Bashir’s family house was currently being lived in by Jews, but it also expressed how he felt going back to the old house he lived in and this makes the document more meaning ful and personal because you understand how he felt from his point of view.

The Document E proves that the Arabs children grew up in Palasine and it’s hard for them to have to leave the land they were born and raised at and all of their hopes and dreams were left there.

According to the extract from the British white paper of May 17th, 1939, it is not apart of the policy that Palasine should become apart of Jewish State. (Doc. D)

This Document is more reliable because it goes against the balfour declaration instead of for the declaration because they believe the declaration is wrong. Its more reliable to go against the Declaration because you have proof to go against it.

This helps prove that even though people want Jewish state in Palasine it is not apart of the policy so it is against the rules because rules are rules and the jews would be going against the rules.

  24. The Arabs should obtain the majority of the land because they were promised the land, and they were their first and had no place to go. According to the British White Paper, published in 1939, the Arabs were assured they would get Palestine by the Ottoman Empire after world war one.(Doc. D) This shows that the Arabs did something to earn the land, and they were promised they could live there. Since this article came from a British paper we should consider this document to be reliable because they didn’t have a bias for the Arabs or the Jews. According to this excerpt from The Lemon Tree by a Palestinian, Bashir, who was visiting his old home before they were exiled by the Jews said that “we were exiled but we left our souls, our hopes, and our childhood in Palestine… we left them in the remains of our fathers and ancestors. (Doc. E) This excerpt shows that the Arabs lived in Palestine for a while, and it was their homeland because the excerpt talked about keeping their souls, and ancestors in Palestine. When looking at this document we should take caution because it was from an Arab, and they can be over exaggerating.

  25. The Jews should have the rights to the land because their religion promised them the land, as well as they need protection from persecution. In the Torah God makes a covenant with Abraham and tells him that the “Holy Land” will belong to the Jews as long as they worship God. God tells Abraham that the whole land of Canaan will be given to the Jews and their descendants and that God will be their God. (Document A). Even though the Torah clearly states that the Jews will receive the “Holy Land” one must be skeptical that this agreement and Abraham and God actually happened because we cannot prove it happened and the Torah was written by Jews, not palestinians. This indicates that God has had written in the Torah: that the “Holy Land” as long as they worship God. I feel that because their religion was started and based off of the “Holy Land” and that their is clear text support for this, because of this, Palestine has and should belong to the Jews. Palestine is like a house and the muslims are the Squaeters becuase it is the Jew’s house but the Muslims were living in it while the Jews were gone. Also in a book written by a Non-Jewish person she often says that the Palestinians were forced out of their land and left to the mercy of other countries (Document E). This is false because when the Jews came to Palestine they settled in and lived among the Palestinians it was the UN that made Israel and it wasn't until the 1960’s that the Jews became aggressors and they still didn't force the Palestinians out of their land. The point of view of this author is clearly Pro-Palestinian and one should be cautious when reading from this source because most of the information is not true and is exaggerated.

  26. The Jews should have control of the majority of Israel/Palestine because the land was granted to them by the British, and also it’s there holy home where their religion started. The Balfour Declaration shows that the Palestine/Israel area is for the Jews (Doc C). The authors purpose for writing this document is to tell the Jews that they have control over land in Israel. This shows that the land should belong to the Jews because the land was given to them by the British, and this means that the land is rightfully theirs. The Palestine area is also a memorable home for the Jews(Doc B). The authors purpose for writing this document is to show that Palestine should be the holy home for the Jews. It is where their religion started and should continue to be there. This shows that the Jews should have control of the land because it was granted to them by the British and is there holy land.

  27. In my opinion, the Jews should control the majority of Israel/Palestine because they need a holy country that belongs to them. In an excerpt from the Bible, it states, “The whole land of canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you, and I will be their God”(Document A, lines 10-12). This quote says that the land was originally given to the Jews by God, and it should be theirs to worship. This is an excerpt from the Bible, in the book of Genesis, and the book is a holy text for Jews, so it is favored toward the Jews. In In an excerpt from a letter to Lord Rothschild written by Arthur James Balfour, it says, “His Majesty’s Government view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object…”(Document C, lines 37-39). This was a letter written by a British secretary. It says that the establishment in Palestine should belong to Jews as a national home for them. The British soldier has no set point of view, but seems to be in favor of the Jews because he thinks Palestine should be their holy land.

The palestanian's should have a majority of Israel because it is rightfully theirs as promised by the british. In document D line 52, it states that Palestine should not be converted into a jewish state against the will of the Arab population. The document also states that on line 54 it they would indeed regard it as contrary to their obligations to the arabs under the mandate, as well as the assurance given to to the arab people in the past.(Document D). I think that this shows how the arabs are being mistreated because they were promised the land and knowing this the british government is still giving the land to the jews. In document E it states that “we were exiled by force of arms. we were exiled on foot.” On line 61 (Document D) shows that Palestanian’s are being forced to leave by force meaning that they could try to find a peaceful way to solve the issue. I believe that these two documents are trustworthy because document D was written in Britain and is going against what their country is doing. Document E is also trustworthy because the author had first hand knowledge of what happened to palestinians.

  29. Although the Israelis have a large population, Palestinians deserve the rights to the land because they lived there first and there had been lots of history made in the country. Many articles explain the conflict, but these two had the most information. The Palestinians explained that they left their joys and sorrows on every grain of sand in Palestine. (Extract from the Lemon Tree by journalist Sandy Tolan, Bloomsbury, 2001, p.201. Document E). The author’s purpose for writing this document was to show the Palestinian point of view. It is reliable because it has actual facts instead of interpreting what it might have been like. Even though Document E is a great source, Document B shows why Jews want land. They have bad reasons and it proves that the Palestinians need the land for more important reasons. It explains how Palestine is their historic home and I believe their reasons weren’t as strong as the Palestinians. Each document proves both point of views and it makes clear that the Arabs deserve more land. In document E is is in the Palestinians point of view so it helps us understand what that group of people was thinking and feeling during the conflict. Document B was in the point of view of the Jews during this time, so it lets us find out more information on their reasonings for wanting the land.

  30. The Jews should have the majority of Palestine because they can make smart choices for Palestine and give Jews a secure homeland after being forced to leave their previous home. The Jewish State was written by Theodore Herzl in 1896, Receiving Palestine would be a great symbol of honor after centuries of Jewish suffering (Document B.) The author’s purpose for writing this document was to explain all the good reasons for why Palestine should go to the Jews which makes it less reliable because the well-being of the Arabs was not focused on as much in this document. But keep in mind, just because he is on the Jewish side does not make the facts untrue. This proves that the Jews deserve a secure homeland because they were forced to leave where the were before. Even though Arabs out populate the Jews, the majority is occupied by Israel with limited Palestinian self government (Document F.) This document is a map of the Middle East from 1947-Present which makes the document is reliable because although some people do change the facts of geography, this map was found from a trustworthy source. This map is found in multiple school curriculum and our school wouldn’t have selected it if it was unreliable.b This proves that Jew should occupy Palestine because they can govern Palestine and make smart decisions that need to be made for the good of Palestine.
