Denver students strike

Current Event #1
SUMMARY:
According to the article Denver Area Students Protest Censoring History Lessons,  on September 23rd 2014 1,000 high school students in the Denver area began a protest because of the way the school was teaching history. Many students said that they were trying eliminate civil unrest, and only teach patriotism to the teens. The students organized and started a strike causing many schools to shut down. This whole idea spread through twitter and other social medias. In order to solve this problem the school board organized a meeting on Oct. 2. They hope to resolve this problem quickly to miss minimal days of school.

ANALYSIS:
I agree with the teachers in this article because I believe you should teach pride in your country, and not to disobey the law. Although if I was a student I would probably strike because I’d want to miss school. I think that only 10% of the people striking actually wanted to strike because it was spread through social media, and students saw it as a free day off. The people who believe in this strike are probably passionate in the idea to be yourself. Therefore I think this strike is silly and not mandatory.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
  1. If you were a student at these schools would you miss school for a reason or miss because you want to miss?
  2. Do you think the new teaching method is valid?

  1. I don't like the new teaching method, it seems forceful on the students.

  2. I'd strike just to miss school because I honestly don't really care about the teaching method, I just want to get a good grade in the class. Also, I'm more on the teachers side, so I wouldn't be striking to change the way their teaching, I would just like to have a day off.

  3. I think that the majority of those students that are rebelling are not just doing it because they want to miss school, as it seems as though they have pretty valid arguments. I think that they strongly believe in something and they think that this extreme step was necessary in changing what they think is wrong with the school.

  4. The students are doing a right thing because they can strike or cause civil unrest. I don't think the purpose of the teaching was to force the students not to protest against something that's not right. The purpose was to avoid situations like Ferguson.
