Local teen arrested for attempting to join ISIS

Where the teen had been arrested before trying to help terrorists.

SUMMARY: A local teen to the city of Bolingbrook, Il was recently arrested before boarding a plane at O’Hare international airport. The teen, Mohammed Hamzah Khan, had been planning on going to Turkey and take part in ISIS, or also known as  Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. ISIS is a terrorist group who, lately, has been cutting off . When Khan was at the airport, he was first approached by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, but later the Chicago FBI agents came to talk to him, and he had been arrested under account of attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization. He carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

ANALYSIS: I agree with the Chicago FBI that they should charge Khan with 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 250,000 because if he hadn't been stopped, he would have been taking part in a terrorist group. In doing this, he would have been murdering innocent people for no reason.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

Do you think this was the best way to handle with what the Chicago FBI did?
Do you believe this was the best possible thing they could have done? Why?

  3. I think that this was the best way to handle the situation. This is because if they had not arrested him and put him in prison for 15 years, he could have tried to escape to Turkey again and be successful in taking part in the ISIS. I think it is crazy that someone this young would try to join a terrorists group, so obviously this kid is not normal and should be kept in jail for 15 years.

  4. I do think that this was the best way to handle the situation. If they had only given Khan a slight consequence it wouldn't stop other people from doing the same thing. An American joining a terrorist group is a serious threat to Americans because Khan has information ISIS does not which could put our country in serious danger. Also, it is important to put Khan in prison because he obviously has something against the United States and even if he did not join ISIS he could still do something harmful in America due to his hate.

  5. I agree that they should of had arrested him for attempting to join ISIS. I agree with what the FBI did to handle this situation of a teen trying to join a terrorists organization. I think this is the best thing that they could have done because if they do not put him in jail he might be able to still join the group.

  6. I agree that the Chicago FBI handled this situation correctly by charging Khan with 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Although, the FBI could have tried to track down the group and stop all possible ways the terrorist group could attack anyone or anything. Overall I think they handled it correctly but could have done for to protect the safety of civilians.

  7. Yes I think how the FBI handled this situation was the best way to handle it because if the FBI didn't do anything, the Bolingbrook student could have taken part in a terrorist group against our country. He could have killed many people that wasn't involved in his life just to follow ISIS.

  8. I think the FBI did the right thing because Khan would have been supporting a terrorist group. Sending him to jail for 15 years and being charged is probably the best option to do so, so he doesn't supply ISIS. This will prevent Khan from helping them ever again.

  9. I believe the Chicago FBI handled the situation extremely well considering the consequences that could have arisen is this teenager was able to board the plane and give information and support to Isis.

  10. I think the FBI did the right thing. Because otherwise he would have joined ISIS or been killed trying to. Either way that could be bad because there is either a video of his head getting chopped off or him chopping off a head. I think the FBI is protecting him from himself and I think prison is the only place he can go at this point.

  11. I think that this punnishment was appropriate for this young teen because he deserves to pay for his actions, and he might be crazy. Also I think that the FBI should question Kahn because he might know information about it.

  13. Yes, I agree with how the FBI handled this situation. Khan could have ended many innocent people's lives if the FBI didn't come in and arrest him. Along with killing innocent people, the fact that Khan even thought about helping a terrorist group is a problem that needs to be brought to his attention and he needs to be punished so he understands what he did was wrong.

  14. I disagree with how the situation was handled. My point of view is that, this person is still a kid. His beliefs can still be changed. Others can still change his views of what is right or wrong. He shouldn't punished for this, instead he should be retaught. Maybe his parents were not around long enough or did not teach him. Maybe he had bad parents showing him the way. We don't know.

  15. I think that the FBI did the right thing by stopping Mohammed at the airport. He is probably underage, which makes this worse. I agree with the FBI giving him 15 years in prison and I think they did all they could because 15 years is a pretty severe sentence to give someone. This is a really scary situation especially because it is a boy around our age and he lives in a town so close to ours.

  16. I agree with what the FBI did. If there was a teen who was getting himself into be apart of the ISIS, it was time to steer him off that path

  17. I believe that the FBI did the right thing and the punishment was just. It sickens me that a US citizen would go against his own country like that. This may strike a major problem in the trust that some people have in middle eastern american's, which is why we need to put this behind us.

  18. I do think that the FBI did the right thing by stoping Khan at the airport. The punishment for him was a little too much. They're not doing anything by putting him in prison for 15 years. His hatred will only worsen over the years and when he comes back to society, he will be full of vengeance towards the United States.
