  1. Overall Imperialism was negative for Africa because of the economic and social effects. According to the Pear's Soap advertisement and Rudyard Kipling, Europeans believed Africans were uncivilized and dirty (Doc. A). This proves socially that Africans were being poorly treated and whites were held at a higher social class. According to the Lipton's Tea advertisement, England was using Africans to make and ship the tea (Doc. B). Therefor, this proves economically that Europeans were using Africans for their own needs and to make a profit. In conclusion, Africans were negatively effected by Imperialism.

  2. I think that overall, imperialism had a negative effect on Africa. I think it affected Africa politically and economically. In the advertisement for Lipton tea, it depicts Africans making and moving all this tea for lipton. Their conditions just look bad and they appear to be being overworked (Doc B). Africa was also affected politically by Cecil Rhodes. In a picture of Cecil physically dominating Africa, it shows me that he is actually taking over Africa and it is not the best for the Africans to be run by Europe (Doc D).

  3. Overall I think that Imperialism was negtive for africa because it forced africans do do things that are not apart of their culture and they are controled by Eurpoe. In Doc F you can see that all of the cournties in Africa are taken over by other countires. SO they are not colonized as one union. In doc a they made soap to make black people clean becuase they said they were dirty. They were telling them things that werent true.

  4. I believe it was negative because as shown in the photo of a sunday school Europeans were forcing Africans to learn their religon. The africans may of not wanted to convert religions, they may of been happy the way they were. (Doc. C) They were treating the Africans as if they were literally dirt as shown in the advertsment for Pears' soap. (Doc. A)

  5. I believe imperialism was an overall negative effect on Africa. In Document D, it shows that a European is is standing over Africa. The Europeans were taking over Africa and taking advantage of the uncivilized continent. They did not have good intentions. In Document B, it showed how the Europeans were using the Africans to do their work labor. Although imperialism did have some good effects most were negative for Africa because they were slowly being taken over and the Africans were unable to do anything about it.

  6. Overall, imperialism had more negative effects on Africa socially and religiously than other factors. According to a Pears' Soap advertisement, Europeans believed that Africans were uncivilized, dirty, and basically not human. They show a monkey-like creature being offered soap by a white man, inferring white men are superior to black men. (Doc A) As stated on a website corbis.com, Africans were gathered in a Methodist Sunday School, being lead by a white man. The white man is teaching them his beliefs and discarding their traditional religion, and they have no choice. (Doc B)

  7. Imperialism in Africa is a negative effect. I believe this because when Europeans came to Africa, they thought Africans were just dirty and uncivilized. (Doc A) They were using them as an example to make Europeans try to be clean and different than the Africans. Gutenberg.org states that when the British arrived, Cecil Rhodes soon came and was planning on making Africa "all British from Cape to Cairo." (Doc D) Imperialism is bad for Africa because some Britain's come and make the life of Africans worse than it already is.

  8. Imperialism was not positive for the Africans and used them to work for them, and take try to take over all of their land. According to Lipton's Teas ad they show many Africans transporting goods onto the ships (Doc B). Shown in "The Rhodes Colossus" it shows how Cecil Rhodes had a vision of having all British from Cape to Cairo. Rhodes had a vision of the British controlling a large part of Africa (Doc D).

  9. I believe that the European imperialism in Africa had a negative effect on sociality and religion. For the religious aspect, I can infer from document C that the Europeans took over old African religion and made them practice their own. This took away from African culture because their religion is a large aspect of their life, but the Europeans changed it. Also, their imperialism major disrespected Africans. From document A, even a "monkey" (as they put in the add) can feel shame for the human race because of this. This is an add that portrays Africans as dirty and Europeans as clean and superior in the most disrespectful way possible. As you can see, the imperialism here was not a plus for Africa or man kind.

  10. I believe that Africa was effected negatively by Imperialism. Africa was effected politically because all of Africa had at one point became completely colonized (Doc F). Africans suffered economically because the Europeans would set up plantations and force the Africans to work and operate these plantations (Doc B). They were effected religiously because they were forced into small churches to learn religions they didn't understand (Doc C). Africans again suffered socially because Europeans thought of the Africans as uncivilized and dirty and that they had soap to cleanse them (Doc A). Africans suffered intellectually when a European missionaries felt up until his last breath that Africa was the open sore of the world (Doc E). These are the reasons why I feel Africa was negatively affected by Imperialism.

  11. I think imperialism ended up being bad for Africa because it destroyed it's old way of life. According to Pear's Soap, it says that Africans are dirty and that Europeans should not be like them. They have to cleanse their bodies so they don't look dirty/African. This was very racist and probably lowered every African's self esteem (Doc A). Another way imperialism is bad for Africa is because politically, it appears that "The Rhodes Colossus" shows how Britain was spread all through Africa. This proves that all of Africa's old way of life was completely washed away! Europe came in and brain washed the Africans to be just like them. (Doc D)

  12. Overall I think that Imperialism was negtive for africa because it forced africans do do things that are not apart of their culture and they are controled by Eurpoe. Accoreding to the African Colony map made in 1900 In (Doc F) you can see that all of the cournties in Africa are taken over by other countires. SO they are not colonized as one union. According to pears soap advertisemnt In (doc a) they made soap to make black people clean becuase they said they were dirty. They were telling them things that werent true.

  13. I believe that Imperialism was negative for Africa. According to the drawing "The Rhodes Colossus" displays Cecil Rhodes plan to gain as much power for Britain as possible by making Africa all British (Doc D). From this I infer that Europeans' main motive was to gain power and therefore they mainly did not care about the Africans and their benefit. Also, a Lipton Tea Ad shows Africans in Africa doing numerous labors for the Lipton brand while Europeans supervise (Doc B). This may provide jobs, but the ad also showed all of the products being exported, therefore not supporting the location in Africa itself and throwing off the production of goods needed to survive in Africa. Also, I think that most likely these workers were getting very low wages.

  14. Imperialism was negative for Africa because of the religious and social affects it had on Africans. Africans were affected religiously because the Europeans tried to change Africa's religious ways to Christianity. According a picture depicting Africans who are taking part in a Methodist sunday school, Europeans seem to have been trying to teach Africans their Christian ways (Doc. C). Africans were also affected socially because they were thought of as a lower social class who was uncivilized and dirty. According to a Pear's soap advertisment and Rudyard Kipling, Europeans believed that Africans were below them because they were dirty and lived as uncivilized citizens (Doc. A). This is how Africans were negatively affected both religiously and socially.

  15. Overall Imperialism Africa negativly based on the Sunday school in document G and and the African map split up in document F/C. In Doc. G it shows how much was exported out of Africa therefore draining all the resources it had, Doc F/C also showed how the Europeans took all of their land and destroyed their culture.

  16. Imperialism effected Africa in a positive way because of document B and document G. This is because in document A it shows a picture of Africans with work and doing there jobs in the Lipton Tea business. This is good for Africans because they now have more opportunities for work. (Document B)In document G it shows a graph of the import levels in Africa. These numbered doubled maybe tripled when Europeans came to Africa. The exports to Africa are good for Africa's relationships and opportunities.

  17. I think it is negative because in document B, it shows Africans working hard and not being treated well. It is racist as well because in the Lipton Tea ad, the picture represents Africans doing the work and not getting rewarded for it. The company forces blacks to make and deliver the product without being payed well or treated equally.

  18. I believe that Imperialism in Africa had a negative affect on Africans because of the way there religion and how politically they were affected. The fact that they were colonized by many countries they were not there for there best but for the best of they're own countrie. Also they religions radically changed which changed all of there traditional habits.

  19. I believe that imperialism had a negative affect on Africa socially and economically. According to a Pear's Soap advertisement and Rudyard Kipling, Europeans believed that Africans were uncivilized and dirty. (Doc A). They wanted to convince European's that it was their moral duty to try and "clean up" Africans and the only way to do this was by using Pear's Soap and teaching them how to clean themselves. In addition, an ad for Lipton Tea shows that Africans were forced to make and transport tea. European's looked down on them and thought they should do the majority of the work for less money to benefit Europeans. Africans were affected by imperialism negatively at the hands of the Europeans.

  20. Imperialism is good for Africa because it brought in more money and more jobs, and it created churches which brought the community together. think imperialism is great for Africa because according to Trevor Owen Lloyd Africa's exports went up a tremendous amount. (Doc.G) This shows that Africa was being more productive with their products, and gaining more money as a country which created more jobs. Also imperialism helped Africa because according to a Methodist Sunday school their are African churches that draw big crowds. (Doc.C) This proves that the church was popular to the people of Africa, and also it brought the community together on Sundays creating a good environment.

  21. Overall I believe that imperialism had a negative effect on Africans socially and economically . According to Pear's Soap advertisement, Europeans believed that Africans were uncivilized and dirty because of their race (Doc. A). This proves that Europeans placed themselves at a higher class than Africans and viewed them as dirty monkeys. According to Lipton's Tea commercial, Africans were the ones that transported and worked hard to get that tea shipped (Doc. B). Even though this could have provided jobs for Africans, this shows that Africans would do the work labor for the Europeans to make an income from the tea. Therefore, imperialism had a negative effect on Africans.

  22. In the long run, Imperialism was a negative thing for Africans in social and economic aspects. Lipton's Tea's advertisement proves that Africans were the ones that had to do the most of the work by having to ship all of the tea. (Doc B). Also according to Pear's Soap Advertisement, Africans were basically thought of as dirty "monkeys" by Europeans and the Europeans thought they had more class than the Africans did. (Doc A). Even though Africans could get some jobs out of this, they were treated bad and had too do all of the hard work. So in the long run, this shows how Africans were effected negatively by Imperialism.
