SUMMARY: A recent ebola scare on a flight from Nigeria to New York has people questioning airports’ procedures when potentially dealing with passengers effected with ebola. The male passenger who was thought to have ebola complained of vomiting once the flight went airborn. He died sometime before the plane landed in New York which had many passengers questioning as to why he passed away. The medical officials investigated and came to the conclusion that the man was not effected with ebola. But Republican Congressman Peter King was so surprised with how the airport handled the situation with lack of security and protection from spreading the virus that he wrote a letter of complaint. Many question as to how the officials could tell so quickly that the man did not have ebola. Airports around the United States have placed ebola screenings with passengers arriving from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since that is where the virus is mostly located. Airports are also providing staff with temperature guns as well as requiring that staff ask passengers from affected areas to fill out questionnaires. Although airports are boosting their security, are they really making a difference in preventing the ebola virus?
ANALYSIS: I think that the officials handled the situation with the dead man very well. Since he did not have any of the serious symptoms that comes with ebola, it was probably very easy to tell that he was not infected with the virus. But I do not think that airports are taking the ebola virus very seriously. Although they are setting up all these procedures and requirements for those coming in from effected areas, I do not believe that it is actually making a difference. I think that these procedures are taking up unnecesary time and money that could potentially be used towards helping the ill in Africa.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
- Do you think the medical officials handled the situation well? If not, how could they have improved their actions?
- Do you think these procedures and requirements are making a difference? Why or why not?

I think that officials handled this pretty well. I could understand why people Congressman King are concerned since the Ebola virus has put many on edge. I guess they could have shown proof publicly proving that the man did not die due to the virus. I think that these procedure and requirements are somewhat making a difference. I don't think it is a waste of money because it is either send the money or allow the virus to come into and spread throughout America.
ReplyDeleteI think that the officials are handling this situation very well because they're taking certain precautions when boarding a flight for Ebola. I don't think it is a waste of money because hopefully that money will stop the virus from getting into the United States. The procedures are making a difference because the virus has not been spreading like it could be.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these procedures are making a difference. Even though they could be more cautious and aware of other countries, if they hadn't adjusted to taking precautions of the three main infected places we would be way more endanger than we are now.
ReplyDeleteI think the medical officials handled the dead man well. If he was not infected than that is probably why it did not take long to determine if he had ebola or not. The airport requirements are making a difference because they are testing people for ebola.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the procedures they are making are making a difference. They still could do many mor ethins to make things better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with how the officials handled the situation, i think that precautions should be taken especially in airports because that is how the virus will spread to different places. I don't think that it is a waste of money because ebola is a very serious disease
ReplyDeleteTo me, the officials are handling this great. In the nicest way possible, I think that it is better that the US is boosting their security in trying to prevent others here from getting it, than try to cure the ill. If we spend lots of money on trying to cure people and it doesnt work, then we don't have enough money to try and prevent it, therefore causing many more people to get it.
ReplyDeleteI agree kkprame. I think that vomiting on a plane when it goes airborne is a normal thing. But I am still in question of how this man really did die. If it wasn't Ebola, what was it?
ReplyDeleteI agree that the officials handed the dead man very well, but disagree that airports aren't taking the Ebola virus seriously. Airports are even asking passengers to fill out questionnaires. The requirement to fill out a questionnaire shows procedures are being taken to prevent Ebola spreading, but you're right that airports aren't making a difference for the disease specifically.
ReplyDeleteI think that the medical officials handled the dead man on the plane very well. However, in my opinion they shouldn't have made this situation a known thing without there being a confirmed case of ebola. I think these procedures are very good and they most likely will be a huge help down the line, and even though it isn't a perfect system it is helping.
