Iranian Murderer Is She Guilty Though?

SUMMARY: An Iranian woman by the name of Reyhaneh Jabbari, age 26, was hung last saturday. She was found guilty of murder for stabbing and killing Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a former employee of Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security. This man had allegedly raped her and she killed him in self-defense. The U.N. reported that she wasn’t given a fair trial and that a death-sentence was unnecessary. The Iranians hanged her despite global outcries for mercy.

ANALYSIS: I feel that what Iranian’s did was wrong. In America a women who fought off a rapist wouldn’t be punished at all. She was clearly defending herself from this man and she did what she needed to do to survive. Clearly in Iran women’s rights doesn’t exist and this women at the very most should have gotten life in prison. Why the Iran wouldn't have listened to all the calls for mercy is beyond me.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Do you think Reyhaneh Jabbari deserved to die?
Why do you think she was sentenced to death?
Would you sentence Reyhaneh Jabbari to death?

  1. I beleive that this girl did not have a fair trial. A death sentence is way to large of a punishment for this crime and they didn't have enough evidence. They probably gave the punishment to her only because she is a girl and a government offical was dead.

  2. This woman's sentence for self defense against a rapist was unjust by American standards, however the way of life in some foreign countries like Iran feel that this punishment is the right thing to do. Therefore, any opinion I express as an American citizen is going to be different from what the Iranians believe.

  3. I believe that the woman who was hanged did not have a fair trial on her side. If what she said was true, that she killed him out of self defense, she had every right to do what she did. Although she may have done something life changing, the death penalty was too harsh of a punishment on her. I believe that the Iranian's should have looked into the case more than to just sentence her to death. I think she had been sentenced to death because the region where she lives looks down on woman altogether.

  4. I do not think that the woman should have been sentenced to death. Although killing and stabbing someone is wrong, if she was just defending herself from something as emotionally and physically scarring as rape, then she had a right to do what she did. I think its terrible that she got hung due to her own self defense. She definitely did not get a fair trial in my opinion.

  5. I do not believe that they should've killed her without investgating it first. They can check (down there) and see if she got raped or not so I think that they could've done that first to prove if she was lying. They shouldn't just assume that she wasn't telling the truth

  6. I believe that she did not deserve to die. She killed that man in self defense, and it is not fair that she was sentenced to death for fighting for her life.

  7. I do not think that this girl should have been hung. Yes, she did kill this man, but it was in self defense! Her getting hung is terrifying and cruel and I question why Iran would do that to her. She did not deserve this at all, the trial was definitely screwed up.

  9. She does not deserve to die, she was protecting herself from a rapist. I would not sentence her to death because she was right to protect herself from a rapist. She was probably sentenced a death penalty because she was a woman.

  10. The Iranian's are completely out of their minds in my opinion. Just bonkers. This case was a matter of self defense. Either the rapist was going to die, or the innocent women was going to die. You decide. The only way this case was right would be if their was 100% no evidence.

  11. I do not think that she deserved to die. He was attacking her as self defense. It's not like she planned to murder him that day, she was just protecting her self. They also needed to give her a fair trial and not the death sentence.

  12. I do not believe that she deserved to die because she killed a rapist. I think she was sentenced to because she was a women in Iran and they do not have many rights. I would sentence her to death or any penalty at all for protecting herself from a rapist.

  13. I think Reyhaneh Jabbari did not deserve to die. It's true that murdering is wrong, but in this case it was just self defense to rape. Rape is a very serious issue and it should give the right to defend yourself, which includes killing the pursuer if it gets that serious. Overall Reyhaneh Jabbari should have been given a more fair trial.

  14. She did not deserve to die for defending herself. This is ridiculous that because of self defense she is dead. Iran needs to take a hard look at its judicial system

  15. I don't think the woman deserved to be hung for death. All she was trying to do was defend herself. Maybe that country doesn't give women as many rights as men, but that doesn't mean that she shouldn't be able to protect herself against people who might try to hurt her. If someone comes after you to try to hurt you, of course your going to defend yourself. It's not like it was your intention to hurt them. She didn't deserve to die.

  16. She did not deserve to die, she had her life in risk, and she decided to protect herself. Which is totally fine. I would not give her a death sentence at all from protecting herself from a dangerous rapist.

  17. I think she shouldn't have died because it was self defense. Also I believe they sentenced her to death because she was a women, and that country believed women weren't as superior. I would not have killed her.

  18. I absolutely do not think Reyhaneh Jabbari deserved to die. It was a form of self-defense and is Iran saying that they would rather Jabbari be raped? Of course, rights for women are a lot different in Iran than in the United States. If the man had not died, who would be punished? I think it all comes down to the lack of women's rights in Iran hence the unfair trial and the UN stating how the death sentence was unnecessary.

  19. Reyhaneh is a very brave woman. So many women do not choose to fight back against rapists and it ends up haunting them for the rest of their lives. She was given a very unfair trial in my opinion because people that are being sexually assaulted sometimes do not have any choice but to kill the sexual offender. It makes me very sad to hear that Reyhaneh was punished for her bravery.

  20. I really think your article is interesting and it really makes me think about the motives, and what people where thinking about this trial. In my opinion she didn't deserve to die because she was acting in self defence, and like you said in america she wouldn't have been punished. But this didn't happen in america this happened in Iran a very violent developing country, and though I think she should have lived, they have there opinions and motives while we have ours.
