Will Hong Kong achieve Democracy?

SUMMARY:
In the article “Hong Kong protests close some businesses; holiday fireworks cancelled”, it explains the current protests taking place in Hong Kong. The protests are being led by activists looking for more democracy in their country. Police released tear gas into the crowds to try to get them to stop. After refusing to stop protesting, and even sitting down in streets and crafting barricades,  police began to stop trying to end the protests. Protesters are upset being under the rule of China because they prefer to not be a communist country.
ANALYSIS:
I think what the citizens of Hong Kong are doing is important and could be beneficial to them. I think that if they want democracy in their country, they should fight for it because it could be a great change for the country. Communism is unfair and if Hong Kong doesn't want to remain under China’s rule, then they shouldn't.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. How can the protesters in Hong Kong successfully achieve the government improvement that they seek?
  2. Do you think the police in Hong Kong will try anything violent again such as the tear gas? Or anything more violent than the tear gas?
  3. Do you think protesters in Hong Kong will try new and more intense tactics in their protests to try to achieve a democratic government?

  1. I think that Hong Kong police will resort to violence while attempting to stop the protests because if they want to stay communist then I think that they will do anything they can to keep it that way, even if they have to harm some of their citizens. They might even shoot people who don't comply with their rules and are outwardly going against their communist laws.

  2. I think this was nicely written and has many key points. As for protesters trying new tactics in their protests, I believe they will do whatever is needed to achieve a democratic government.

  3. I agree with Grace that the protesters will not just give up on the cause, but I think the same goes for the police. I think each side will keep adding more and more force in order to support their cause.

  4. I think protesters will try new ways to get a democratic government because that is what they're looking for so why would they not try some new tactics.

  5. I think that the police will come back with much more anger. I think that the Chinese will not let Hong Kong go with such ease, and that most likely the Chinese military could be sent in to back the police.

  6. Hong Kong should be able to do what they believe is the best. If they want democracy in there country, then they should be able to have democracy. Also I believe the police shouldn't be able to release tear gas at the people in Hong Kong when the people are just trying to get something that they think would be better for the country.
