Underwater Archaeology

OCTOBER

SUMMARY: In the article, Underwater Archaeology, written by Cody Crane on September 26, 2014, archaeologists and scientists are trying to improve/create a new robotic diving suit. This suit will allow divers to dive in the ocean for a longer amount of time as well as deeper into the ocean. Scientists are creating this suit to allow archaeologists to discover more artifacts and details about the shipwreck in the 1900s right by the Greek Island of Antikythera, which was believed to be a transporting boat to Rome before it sank. The suit has cables and video cameras to allow the diver to communicate and take pictures with the people above sea level. With all the advantages of this new suit, archaeologists will be able to discover more information and treasurable items about the sunken ship of Antikythera.

ANALYSIS: I think it’s really interesting how much technology has improved studies and made our human life easier over the years. Without any of this diving gear such as cables, video cameras, oxygen tanks, etc., none of the diving or discoveries of the sunken ships would have taken place. History could be different if we didn’t have certain photographs or inventions to help us in our everyday life. Technology is a big part of our life and sometimes we don’t even recognize it.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
  1. In the future, what advantages might scientists add to the new suit to make diving for archaeologists more easier?
  2. What kinds of new objects will the archaeologists find on the ship? Will it be worth anything?
  3. Since the ship sunk more than 2,000 years ago, how might these objects and bones not be ruined already by the ocean?

  1. I think that it is interesting that scientists are able to make a suit that allows people to go so deep into the water. Because the ship sand over 2,000 years ago, some of the bones and other things might be ruined from just the sinking of the ship and because it had been untouched for so long. The scientists may find some things that relate to the past, to help us better understand what happened, or why the ship sank, if nobody knows about it. In the future, they might add a navigation device so its easier to get to where they want to go without guessing.

  2. I find this a very smart idea, technology is improving, also mystery of ancient disasters will be found. They will be able to find more clues on what happened. This diving suit shows the advancement in our technologies and that the world is really going forward. This suit will also be useful for many more scientist experiments.

  3. 1. from the picture i notice the suit looks very stiff. It would be better if you could move around more in it.
2.I think they will find personal items of people on the ship. It will either be very valube or not valueable because it will be so ruined from being under the water.
    3. I think the flow of the ocean is not too strong way under the water. and it might be something with the salt water and what salt does it keep it in tact.

  4. I think that this is a very big advancement in underwater exploration equipment. I also don't think that it is only limited to history. This article mentions that the archaeologists are mainly interested in a sunken ship by Rome, but there is also so much more information that can now be found outside of that. This suit could also be helpful in marine biology and other areas of research underwater that have been difficult to study up until this point.

  5. I agree that it's interesting how scientists are able to create a suit that will allow divers to dive deeper into the ocean and for longer. Most likely the bones and objects will have eroded away to some extent, but most of them will still be recognizable to scientists. Archaeologists could possibly find jewelry, pictures, clothing, etc. Overall I think it's pretty cool how far technology has come to this day.

  6. Amanda, I think this article is really cool! It is very interesting to me how much technology has grown since the olden days. Although, I think this underwater suit is awesome, I feel like it is so high-tech, that i feel like it won't work well enough yet. Technology grows throughout time, so I feel like if you throw a bunch of high tech stuff all at once, it might not work well. Yes, the archaeologists will be able to find many valuable things, but it still might be tougher than it sounds.
