  1. Racial segregation of the past significantly affect society today because they affect education in black people. The effects on United States and South Africa today are somewhat similar due to the fact that black people aren’t getting the best education they can in either country. In the article, “Apartheid’s long shadow”, it states, “South Africa’s schools are still struggling with the effects of the Apartheid era…” (lines 59-60). They are still struggling because of the bad conditions and bad educators in Africa. In the “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” article, it talks about how black people are less motivated to get an education, even with the excellent education they are provided, because they feel like they are less than white people. It says, “Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science courses than white students. They are three times as likely to be suspended and expelled, setting them up for educational failure”(lines 17-19). This explains the statistics of how blacks are getting less of an education in both America and South Africa.

  2. Racial segregation and injustices of the past somewhat affect society today because South Africa and blacks in the United States are still struggling with racism due to poverty. The effects on the United States and South Africa that exist today are somewhat similar because both countries have high crime rates of Africans in South Africa and blacks in the United States. For example, in the article, “Apartheid’s Long Shadow,” it says, “But South Africa also faces many challenges. Almost a quarter of its workforce is unemployed.” and it also states that, “Half the country’s students never make it to 12 grade.” This shows that although apartheid ended many years ago, South Africa is still struggling with the effects that it left behind. Also in the article, “When Whites Just Don’t Get It,” the author says, “Slavery and post-slavery oppression left a legacy of broken families, poverty, racism, hopelessness, and internalized self-doubt.” By this the author is explaining that the racism that used to exist in the United States left a shadow on blacks in the United States that they can not seem to escape. The effects in both countries are similar because both countries are struggling with poverty and poor education for colored people which is believed to be resulting in Africans and blacks taking on violence and kids acting out.

  3. The systems in South Africa or the United States are somewhat racist because they both offered worse education systems for blacks communities and offered better education for white communities. This affects the children who are going to these schools with worse education because they may not reach their full potential if they do not have as good as an education as other children. In addition Apartheid’s long shadow said “South Africa’s schools are still struggling with the legacy of the apartheid era.” This shows that there is still a difference in the education that the white and black students are getting. Similarly When Whites Just Don’t Get It said “Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced and science courses than white students.” This shows that less money is going blacks schools than the white schools.

  4. The system in the United States are somewhat racist because although affluent schools have better resources, the less affluent schools still receive education even though it might not be as good.this affects the opportunities minorities have because they might not receive as good of education as they deserve because they are less wealthy. In contrast, the article The Whites Don't Get It said, "Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science courses than white students.” Even though that statement might be true, just because you are white doesn’t mean you are wealthy. There are wealthy blacks and poor whites, skin color doesn’t automatically determine wealth by any means. In addition, the article Apartheid’s Long Shadow said, “...The education system is often failing the very children depending on it most to escape poverty.” This means that the poor children who are relying on good education to make a better life for themselves aren’t getting what they need to do that. I think that in South Africa during and after the Apartheid racism was still prevalent because the government wasn’t supplying black schools with knowledgeable teachers. Overall, times are extremely different than they were but racism does still exist when it comes to education especially. Many times the system isn’t being racist on purpose but it does still come across that way.

  5. Racial segregation of the past significantly affect society today because our legal and educations systems seem to be inequal. The effects on The United States and South Africa’s today are different because our racial inequalities are unintentional. In South Africa Apartheid was meant to hurt non-whites. For example in the article, “Apartheid’s Long Shadow”, the author states “the government established a separate “Bantu” education system that aims to make blacks subservient laborers” (Celia Dugger Line 60). This shows that the whites wanted to make blacks unequal in anyway possible. The U.S. did not intentionally create a racist system nor are there that many racist people anymore. Our education system has a flaw in it that doesn’t account for poverty, because the size of the taxes you pay tends to affect the advances of the school your children go to. In “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” the author says that “We are not racists, but we accept a system that acts in racist ways” (Nicholas Kristof Line 115). This shows that we may not choose to be racist but the design of our system does.

  6. Racial injustices of the past significantly affect society today because there are still many schools that have a poor education system. The effects on United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have poor education systems, but South Africa has a greater amount and worse cases. For example “Apartheid's Long Shadow” states that “children get to high school not knowing their multiplication tables,” (lines 82-83). This proves that South Africa has such poor education offered that students are denied what they should have learned in 2nd or 3rd grade. In addition, “The Whites Don’t Get It” states that “African-American children on welfare heard only 29 percent as many words in their first few years as children of professional parents,” (lines 59-60). This shows African-Americans are getting better education than they would in South Africa, but are still lacking the best education possible (which most whites have). In conclusion both the United States and South Africa have poor education systems which deals with racism, but in some cases South Africa has it worse.

  7. Racial segregation of the past significantly affects society today because the legacy still lives on and equality has not been reached yet. The effects on United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries still see the effects today, especially the youth. For example in the article “Apartheid’s Long Shadow”, it states how “the education system (of South Africa) is often failing the very children.” It goes on to say how poorer kids get an education that will not be able to get them a meaningful job and this all goes back to apartheid. The teachers teaching these children were taught under the Bantu system, making them uneducated as well. This is similar to the United States today. In the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” it states how “slavery and post-slavery oppression left a legacy of broken families, poverty, racism, hopelessness…” This proves that the effects of racial segregation really are still felt today. I think that this example similarly goes back to racial problems in the past. This article explained how many blacks don’t graduate or take advanced classes. I think this is because in order to get an unbroken education, you need to be rich or at least that is how the article explained the United States’s system. If you don’t have an education, you can’t make money, and therefore won’t be able to pay for better schools.

  8. Racial segregation of the past significantly affect society today because of blacks not having the same opportunity as whites do. It’s not because they choose to not be successful, it’s because they really don’t have much as a choice. The effects on United State and South Africa’s are somewhat different and similar of that both countries have white and black societies are separate with whites having an advantage They are different is that South Africans would’ve been more successful. For example, “Whites Don’t Get It” said “Does anybody really think that we all take off from the same starting line…Society creates opportunity and resiliency for middle-class white boys who make mistakes; it is unforgiving of low-income black boys. “

  9. Racial segregation of the past significantly affects society today in the U.S because the inequality between the two races in many aspects of life. A similar effect in South Africa today is happening with education and overall equality. In the Apartheid article, the author states “2 out of 1,000 sixth graders performed at grade level on the 2005 math test in predominatly black schools, compared with 2 out of 3 in schools once reserved for whites.” This proves that something is wrong with the education system in the non-white areas. My guess would be lack of educated teachers due to their education under apartheid. Also, in the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It”, the author states that “black students are far less likely to be in advanced math and science courses and are more likely to get expelled or suspended. This shows a similar problem as in South Africa and chalked up to the uneducated teachers and little resources.

  10. Racial segregation of the past somewhat affect society today because of the reputation the whites gave on the blacks. The effects on United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar……. both countries have racism but are different because the way it is enforced. South Africa to this day is still grasping on some of the past, and just can’t seem to let go and move on. In the article “Apartheid’s long shadow”, it stated, “In a nation that was then 70 percent black, a white minority ruled, denying blacks basic rights and essentially treating them as aliens in their own land.” This shows that even though apartheid ended, whites still feel superior to blacks even though there are less of them in South Africa. In the US, whites are very racist to blacks without even noticing and sometimes it happens everyday. Something I see everyday with racism is on the app called Vine. Vine is an app that you can record little videos and racism is definitely common there, some people don’t even realize they are doing it. Not only from whites to blacks, but from blacks to white, and other races! It’s brutal but nobody even pays attention. Racism is enforced differently in South Africa and US by in SA it is more physical and is noticed more. In the US, it is very verbal but can still hurt. In the article, “When Whites Just Don’t get It” it says, “The truth is that injustice is easy not to notice when it affects people differently from ourselves; that helps explain the obliviousness of our own generation to inequality today. We need to wake up.” I completely agree with this! Some people need to realize what they are doing.

  11. Racial segregation of the past somewhat affects society today because of the system they used back then still divides people. The effects on United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because of the way they divided people but are also different because of why people were segregated in the first place. In both countries blacks were discriminated against because of their color but in the United States we forced blacks to work for us while in South Africa they didn’t necessarily force black people to work but because of their setup educational system a lot of them ended up working in occupations similar to that of a slave. In the article it says that South African students want to be successful but because of their system they cannot. The same is like that in the US, the government doesn’t fund black schools properly

  12. Racial segregation of the past signifacently affects society today because theirs many problems that has developed from these. Both countries have education issues, but the U.S. one is a little less significant. as example according to The Long Shadow of Apartheids it says that whites in South Africa test signifacently better than blacks in their country. This proves that the white schools have more money, and better staffs. Also the article The Whites Don’t Get It, claims that Africans are less likely to attend schools offering advanced courses, and three times more likely to get suspended. This is why I believe we need to fix this issue, especially in South Africa where blacks make up most of the population.

  13. · Racial segregation of the past significantly/somewhat/minimally affect society today because The reputation the whites put on the blacks still effects how we see blacks today. In the article When Whites Just Don’t Get It, lines 33 to 36 explain how a young black boy was arrested for stepping out of a big house, so the cops though he was robbing the house. This proves that white people still don’t trust black people and they think that just because they are black they are doing a crime. In the article Apartheid’s long shadow, lines 22 to 27 explain how in South Africa there is 70% black living there. Even though there was less white people, a white minority ruled. The blacks were being treated like aliens in their own country. This is because the way blacks were treated before, White people still think its okay to treat them bad.

  14. Racial Segregation of the past somewhat affected society today because back then everyone was racist and now people have learned everyone is equal. There are still some people in the world don’t don’t think blacks are equal to right but most of the world believes of equality. On line 5 in the article Apartheid’s long shadow, it says how students kept waiting for help but there was no action. Teachers wouldn’t even show up to teach their classes and no one did anything to help the students. I believe white teachers like ones in America, came from a better area so they learned how to teach and that is why white kids have higher test scores. The teachers actually do their jobs, unlike in Africa they don’t feel it is necessary to help kids learn. White people in the past were thought of as better than blacks and that they deserved better things. Now, the public realizes we need to help less fortunate education programs like in South Africa to give those students more opportunities and knowledge. Mostly everyone knows blacks and whites are equal and deserve the same chances, not whites being treated with better things.

  15. Racial segregation of the past somewhat affects society today because the black communities in South Africa and the United States have not gotten over the poverty that Jim Crow laws and Apartheid put them in. Therefore the effects on the United States and South Africa are very similar because both countries have unequal education systems but they are different because the United States have more dedicated teachers then black schools in South Africa. The systems in the United States are not racist because we do not exclude any race from our schools, businesses, hospitals ect. Though some black communities culture affects their chances of becoming succesful. Both articles would agree that mostly whites are at advantage but blacks still have a chance to become successful in the US and South Africa

  16. Racial injustices in South Africa and the United States past significantly impact an unequal and unjust society today because we still carry those same harsh stereotypes and segregation from the past in the present. If you step back and look at both countries, you will realize how alike the United States and South Africa really are. The education systems and economy of both countries show how they both share the same segregated societies because each of them struggles with unemployment and unfair schooling for nonwhites. The only difference is, South Africa had he apartheid and the United States didn’t, but the outcome in both was still the same, inequality and unjust societies. For example, the article “Apartheid’s long shadow”, states, “The inequality that persists in South Africa’s schools today has it’s roots in apartheid,” (lines 21,22). This proves how the unequal treatment that exists in South Africa’s schools is occurring because of everything that people witnessed in apartheid. Many teachers were around during apartheid and most likely have a certain belief on the treatment on whites and nonwhites, which even more likely influences the students on how the world should be, according to their teachers. This affects society today because the students who have the best abilities to change the unjust treatment going on, are the ones being taught they have no future. Another example is in the article, “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” in lines 25 and 26. It states, “All these constitute not a black problem or a white problem, but an American problem,”. This explains perfectly how South Africa and the United States are similar because, not only do both countries continue to struggle with segregation, but the unemployed due to racism is causing both countries to suffer. The issue of race in each country causes nearly 70% of middle-aged black men who never graduated from high school to be imprisoned.

  17. America and South Africa have similarities based on inequality because at one point in both countries history, blacks were segregated from whites. Racial segregation of the past somewhat affected society today because of certain laws and rules. According to the article Apartheid’s Long Shadow, it states in line 59-60 that “South Africa’s schools are still struggling with the legacy of the apartheid era, when the government established a separate “Bantu” education system that aimed to make blacks subservient laborers”. This demonstrates that lower class Africans aren’t receiving as much education as whites are since the “Bantu” system had created different schools based on race. Another example from the article When Whites Just Don’t Get It, lines 72 and 73 said that “ 99.9% of blacks were not arrested and charged with robbery in 2012, yet they are still tarred by this pernicious stereotype”. What this proves is that even to this day, there are still people in the world that assume that blacks are always criminals just because of their race and color. But as we know thats not always the case. From these examples provided, there is still racial segregation that affects society today.

  18. Racial segregation of the past significantly affect society today because the shadow of apartheid still comes and goes. The effects on the United States and South Africa today are different because of all the inequality. In my opinion, South Africa is still feeling the effects of apartheid because in the article, “Long Shadow of Apartheid,” it states “African students never make it to the 12th grade, while some all white suburban schools are excellent.” Therefore, the segregation and apartheid of the past have put a negative influence and affect on society. The shadow of apartheid has been a killer to African society today. On the other hand, white schools are apparently, excellent. This proves the fact that segregation in the past has affected our society today. Improvements have been accomplished, but we can not simply forget about our past. What we thought ended years ago, is still floating around in todays world. All of the inequality in Africa is simply unacceptable. The crime levels between South Africans and Americans are very different. In the article, “Whites just don’t get it”, it states, “Nearly 70 percent of middle aged black men who never graduated from high school have been imprisoned. This proves a very large and violent response and effect left from apartheid. First of all, in America it is rare for any teenager to not graduate high school. Secondly, the ones who don’t graduate high school are not criminals, for the most part. So this proves South Africa’s different effect of apartheid compared to the United States.

  19. Racial segregation of the past affect society today because people are used to thinking that whites are better than blacks, and although they don’t say it out loud or even think that they think that way, secretly they do and they racially segregate people, even if they don’t realize that they are doing it. The effects on the United States and South Africa today are somewhat similar because both counties have racially segregated blacks from whites in the past but are different because the U.S. has advanced more than South Africa has and has a better education system and is more open to black and white equality. For example, “When Whites Don’t Get It” states that “The greatest problem is not with flat-out white racists, but rather with the far larger number of Americans who believe intellectually in racial equality but are quietly oblivious to the injustice around them.” It goes on to say- “We are not racists, but we accept a system that acts in racist ways” This proves that many people think that they are not a racist, but they are in the fact that they unknowingly segregate people because that is what the social system is in America. In addition, “Aparthied’s Long Shadow” said “Teachers say [black]children get to high school not knowing their multiplication tables. If you say 3 times 3, they will say 6” That is disturbing because of the lack of education for black children in Africa. This explains how in both countries, whites still look down on blacks as inferior.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Racial segregation affects society today because a Pew Survey said that the idea of racial segregation is getting noticed more than it should. “A plurality of whites in a recent survey said that the issue of race is getting more attention than it deserves.” (Lines 5-6) This shows that this survey creates an unequal society today because the topic was brought up because of this survey. People will start to be more racist because of this. Also, the Bantu system affects today’s society because it meant that blacks were under apartheid. “South Africa’s schools are still struggling with the legacy of the apartheid era… Most teachers in S.A.’s schools today got inferior educations under the Bantu system.” (Lines 59, 66) This shows that people are still being affected unequally today. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are similar because some places in the US have the same treatment as places in Africa. They are also different because a black child born today has a life expectancy five years shorter than a white child.

  21. Racial segregation of the past somewhat affect society today because although apartheid has ended, many of the same types of things are happening to them. The effect of United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have less work for people who don’t have a good education, but they’re different because the United States requires people to get a good education, and have opportunities for people who don’t have as much money, whereas South Africa’s education system is directed towards the richer families, and the whites. For example, “Apartheid’s long shadow” states that South Africa’s schools are still struggling with the legacy of the apartheid era, from when they used to have schools called “Bantu”, which were only for the blacks, and they would get a lesser education. This shows that the Africans aren’t getting the same amount of education as the whites are, because the “Bantu” schools have teachers that don’t know as much as a regular school for whites would. Another example, stated in “When Whites Just Don’t Get It.” says that black students are much less likely to attend schools that offer advanced math and science courses than white students. This shows that just because of what they look like, they aren’t attending the right school with the right education. This shows why blacks may not have as good of an education as the whites do.

    ReplyDelete
  22. racial segregations of the past significantly affect society today because although segregation is over africa is still struggling with racial equality. Black students in africa as well as in america do not get the same opportunities as white students. One reason for this as supported by evidence in the “when whites just don’t get it” article, the opportunities differ because we all start from a different starting line, “you owe your success to your parents who read to you, to decent schools, to social expectations that you would end up in college rather than prison.” thats how most white kids start that is not always true for black kids. Black kids don’t always go to a good school because their parents didn’t either and they didn’t get a high paying job so they couldn’t live in a town with a better education.

  23. Racial segregation of the past significantly affect society today because of the injustices it brought about to the Africans in South Africa, and the African Americans in America. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are very similar, both countries had segregation however the United States was never under the influence of the South African Apartheid. For example, the conditions of African American schools in the United States was extremely poor, in “Apartheid’s Long Shadow” we learn that African schools also had poor conditions.
