According to New York Time, the NHL have paid tremendous amount of money to players sidelined by concussion, and that also the NHL must change its rules in order to prevent serious injuries such as Brain Trauma. This source is very reliable because New York times is one of the most popular newspapers in the USA.
| Concussions occur like this |
1) "Of the 1,307 players who appeared in at least one game over those three seasons, 63 percent missed time to injury, according to the study."How bad is that? more than half the players that play at least one game in the NHL get injured, for whatever reasons. The NHL has to change that and quickly for the safety of their players.
2) "Concussions were among the most financially costly injuries, the researchers determined, amounting to $42.8 million of the $218 million in annual wages paid to sidelined players. Head and neck injuries, as well as leg and foot injuries, were found to be the most expensive in overall cost. " 20% of the costs for injuries is concussion over the last season. Over any time of injury, concussion have 1/5 of the cost leaving 4/5 to all the other imaginable injuries. For many years the NHL have been creating helmets that are anti-concussion, but the game is so physical that concussions keep coming and coming. Another reason that leads to a lot of concussions is fighting which should be banished because over the last years some tough guys have died of cerebral problems.
3)"In recent seasons, the N.H.L. has largely outlawed hits to the head and other dangerous checks, and established a Department of Player Safety. The department, led by the Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan, has overseen a sharp increase in fines and suspensions for contact causing injuries." This is the right thing to do, and the NHL should keep being more and more severe on hits to the head and dangerous hits. For the good safety of their players. In the mid 1900's players were not even playing with a helmet. At least, now of age it is a little more safe because players wear helmets to protect their heads a little more, BUT the game has gotten a lot more physical these days so it kind of balances out.
In resume, the NHL should keep being very strict on their rules, for the safety of their players and they should keep on doing scientific research to keep upgrading their helmets for protection.
Future Question: Which players are more Productive? Now or Before?
