9/11 still kills people today

Using information from the article, WTC Related Cancer takes life of yet another 9/11 First Responder, a source that provides data and 1st hand stories, I will answer the question, “How are the long-lasting effects of the 9/11 terrorism still affecting people today?”

A type of cancer that has been believed to develop in people that survived 9/11 is starting to take the lives of 9/11 first responders. 

After reading the article, I think that the long-lasting effects of the attack on the victims are still harming them. I think it’s sad that even though they lived, they have to suffer with a disease that was caused by the event that could have killed them, but didn’t. This cancer has already killed many survivors, most of them being first responder firefighters.

The article, by Troy Rosasco, tells the story of Scott Stelmok, who is one of the victims of this cancer, “One of New York City’s finest and resident of North Babylon, Scott Stelmok, has succumbed to a multitude of 9/11 related cancers at the young age of 45. Stelmok was a member of the New York City Police Department for 20 years and was a first responder after the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. As a member of the 108th Precinct in Queens he was called to respond on 9/11, rushing to the scene to search for emergency vehicles that had vanished under the debris and rubble. What he didn't know, as so many others were unaware of that day, was that by doing his job, he would be afflicted with several different cancers almost 7 years later” (Rosasco).

I think it is unfortunate that Stelmok must still suffer from the long term effects of something that happened a long time ago. I think that it’s unfair that after these people, who were able to survive the first time, now have to suffer from something they thought would never affect them. Now, this cancer could end Stelmok’s life earlier than he is expecting it to, especially because he is so young.
