-Group's overall essential question:
HISTORY: How do groups gain and lose power?
They gain/lose power depending on what happens in the city on a day to day basis.
-My research question connected to essential question:
How did the Great Chicago Fire affect the history of Chicago, and what did it do for the city? How did they gain power that they controlled?
-I find the history of old cities and how they have changed over the years interesting. The history of Chicago is very unique because I know that many things have been held in the city, and there were many outcomes of the city that were basically made by those things. There were two World’s Fair held here, we had one of the tallest buildings in the world, and many other things. One of the main things that has happened was the Chicago Fire of 1871. I know that the fire had done a great deal of damage to the city, and I am interested in what the city did to overcome what had happened, and how it changed the city overall. Also, I know that there still are buildings standing up from the fire, and I want to learn more about it, and why they stood up and why others didn’t. Chicago before the fire of 1871 was built basically on a swamp, at the level of water. It was easy for people to access the water supply then. As the Great fire of 1871 hit, it destroyed almost everything in it’s path for two days before rain started to put it out. A lot of the buildings that had been built then were with wood, many buildings were left from the World’s Fair years before. Of those buildings, only a few were built with masonry or brick that could withstand the fire. I would like to know what the city (government) did to rebuild the power that was lost.
