Psychology of a Sports Fan

What makes sports fans so crazy and passionate about their favorite team, even though they have absolutely no affiliation with them? Why do fans sacrifice so much on sports fandom and things that will have little to no impact on their life? This is a subject that I am very interested in and would love to learn more about. It is intriguing to me as to how much people (including myself) put into a team when it doesn’t really have an impact on their life if they succeed or not. Sports is an interesting topic for me and anything that has to do with it I would like to research.
