Why are rivalries so important to the fans of school and sports teams?
What shapes people beliefs?
When I entered Hinsdale Middle School, I saw the effects that rivalries had on the school. Clarendon Hills was the rival team down the street who we played in all sporting events. The atmosphere and the attitude of the students at these games made me wonder why this specific game was so important. When I arrived at HCHS, I noticed an even larger effect that our rivalry with LT had on the student body. Now I am as caught up in the madness as the players on the team, and I wonder, what made this happen? What drives fans to go so far as to injure rival fans? Not only does this happen at schools, but with professional sports as well. In schools, we all know that peoples views on rivalries are shaped by the grade above them, but what drove the initial class of students to make up this rivalry? Through research, I will find the answers to all these questions, and hopefully, the source of all rivalries.
