Why do people believe in myths?

We are interested in this topic because we live near a haunted restaurant, and have always been curios about where the myth even started. So many different stories have been told and we are so intrigued on why people believe in them. Also, we know of an abandoned water park that we hear is haunted by ghosts and have always wondered what actually happened and what is made up.
