Myths of Bermuda Triangle

“The Bermuda Triangle is a mythical section of the Atlantic Ocean roughly bounded by Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico where dozens of ships and airplanes have disappeared.” -History.com

Why has the Bermuda Triangle been an area of mystery for many many year? What causes all these strange things to happen?

History.com has a lot of the answers to why somethings have happened in this area. The unexplained circumstances surround some of these accidents. One example is when the pilots of a squadron of U.S. Navy bombers became disoriented while flying over the area and the planes were never found. There has been many boats and planes that have vanished from the area even in good weather without any radioing distress messages. The area is a corner triangle of the Atlantic ocean where 500,000 miles are between Bermuda, Miami and Puerto Rico. Hundreds have disappeared mysteriously since 1918. It is one of the most famous mysterious places in all the world. This area has confused scientists, experienced sailors and even military investigators.

There has been planes disappearing, strange lights seen and a whole lot more weirdness. There has been ships that have shown up completely empty with no signs of struggles for the ship just no crew. Why has ships and planes gone missing without a trace? Why has there been problems with the equipment or compasses change course by themselves?

“When Christopher Columbus sailed through the area on his first voyage to the New World, he reported that a great flame of fire (probably a meteor) crashed into the sea one night and that a strange light appeared in the distance a few weeks later.” -History.com

Historical shipping records show that the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle are much older than many people realize. Problems in the Bermuda Triangle have started with Christopher Columbus. His log about the new world has been very accurate and has showed that Christopher experienced issues in the Bermuda Triangle. Christopher Columbus recorded that just as he entered the Bermuda area he was experiencing problems with his compass and he saw a large “fireball” hit the ocean. He saw strange lights and strange things happening there.

This shows that the story of the Bermuda Triangle is not just some urban myth and dates back to hundreds of years ago. About 450 years after Columbus on December 5th 1945 the U.S. Military experienced problems. 5 U.S. torpedo bombers flew from a naval base in fort lauderdale florida and then all 5 planes disappeared. The Navy sent out a rescue plane and that too disappeared. 6 planes all flown by skilled pilots vanished. No one knows where all of them have gone. The problem with the Bermuda Triangle is not just a 21st century myth. Its a problem that has been occurring for hundreds of years.

In 1963, the crew of 39 was all lost and the tanker was never found. They disappeared off the southern coast of Florida. This disappearance has been shown in many books about the Bermuda Triangle however, authors don’t say that the Coast Guard concluded that the vessel was in very bad quality and shouldn’t of gone out to sea. Fires started with regularity on the ship. The ship was also known to have a weak back. When it has a weak back that means that the keel would split when weakened by corrosion which would make the boat split in half. The boat’s form had been revealed by a conversion from its original mission as an oil tanker to carry molten sulphur. This conversion left the vessel with a very high center of gravity, which makes the ship at a better chance to capsize.

The SS Marine Sulphur Queen was a bad mess and seems unfair to blame the Bermuda Triangle because the ship was not in shape. The Bermuda Triangle could've been a leading factor in the disaster of the SS Marine Sulphur Queen but, the same thing could of happened in any area of water because of the poor ship. However, it is mysterious how all the crew died and the ship was never found, not even pieces of the ship that could lead to evidence.  :

FUTURE RESEARCH: What is the science or psychology behind when people believe in myths? I think it would be interesting to research about why people believe certain things about myths.
