In this post, I will resolve the question: When technology improves, will it destroy society?
The article As Technology Gets Better, Will Society Get Worse? by Tim Wu from The New Yorker help argues that the introduction of technology is bringing social/mental and physical problems even though evolution is occurring.
- Tim Wu explains how technology is making our lives much faster; so fast that we sometimes don’t even notice we’re changing. He also acknowledges that humans are being redefined, which is nerve racking because change isn't always for the best.
- The article references an isolated area south of Hudson Bay where the Oji-Cree live. This area lacks modern technology and the residents sleep in tents or cabins; as a result there were absences in mental breakdowns and substance abuse within the population. I think this is because the people were forced to be one with nature and get plenty of exercise, which is lacking today.
http://i.huffpost.com To add onto the Oji-Cree story, technology was brought into their lives. As a result, obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes massively increased. Social problems such as alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide have also become very common. This is true not only for the Oji-Cree people, but for large populations all over the world. People are constantly gaining health and social problems which as stated in the article is an effect from the spread of technology.- Tim also addresses biological and technological evolution. Biological evolution is eliminating those who don’t adapt to the environment. While on the other hand, Technological evolution is about our desires; not adapting. I believe this is important because by increasing our knowledge in technology, we are eliminating the natural ways of evolution.
