Do you know at what point hockey is expensive? Read more to find out..
I this week blog post I try to answer the question "How have the cost of hockey change over the years?
According to the article "ICE HOCKEY"posted by the database history of people it shows at what point the cost of hockey have changed. This source is reliable because it is a vast database with a large amount of content and also because the database is fairly well known.
Thesis: Price increases in hockey have mainly been due to the overall inflation in the economy but also special events like World War I and II.
The price of goods in the world have driven up so much in the past century that it has influenced the economy of hockey too. According to the article "ICE HOCKEY" It states that in 1904 "they took advantage of free agency in the new league and signed with Calumet as player-coach for $1,800 per season (worth $44,700 today). This shows how everything has changed these days and that hockey is a lot more expensive now. It also means that, the the economy in hockey has driven up about 400% from what it originally more. Even there, there is not 1 NHL player that will sign for 44 thousand $, because the minimum salary is 525,000$. The converting of 1,800$ to 44,000$ is based upon how price of goods changed over time. (ex: houses and many more.)
In the same article it states that in the 50s "Conn Smythe sold three years worth of game for 540k which is 3,6 Million today." Which shows at what point that it was an evolution throughout the years and it never stopped. Many factors affected the change of cost of hockey such as The World War I and II the expansion of the team, the new league and the International hockey program. Another Further Expansion really was a factor because a bigger market means more money for the director and which means more fans which leads to an augmentations of prices.
FUTURE RESEARCH: In my future research I will talk about everything that is injury related with hockey.
