Sports Technology

New technology has allowed for a more enjoyable game for most of the fans and viewers. The article Technology In Sports, which is a sports and science resource, explains what the effects were for some of the new inventions used for equipment, drills, and making calls for the referees. The research question I will try to answer here is: How has new technology affected sports?

Thesis: Technology in Sports argues that new inventions with different views from the newly invented cameras have helped made sports more fair.

  1. “One sport that has resisted the use of high tech assistance is soccer and football. Replays could be used to decide offside decisions, whether a ball passes over the goal line, and clarify penalty decisions”.
  • This quote really surprised me as I thought it was pretty interesting. I would have never guessed that soccer and football require less high tech assistance than some of the other sports like cricket or tennis. But I guess whatever keeps the game going, whether theres barely technology or not, is the best way to go.

2)  “Hawk-eye is the name of a computer and camera system which traces a ball’s trajectory. It is being used in international cricket and tennis, and many other sports are also looking at making use of this technology”.
  • I find this quote interesting because it’s a new and different way of thinking. Creating the new Hawk-Eye machine will allow for better calling. Referees can now look very closely at peoples feet and the line of discussion to see what’s the best call for it. Inventing more and more machines like this will create an intense, fun game.

3)   “Most professional sports in the United States have long instant replay and other high tech aids to help referees’ call for many years”.
  • I think this is a very important factor. This quote is basically summing up what technology has done for sports. It has provided them with instant replays so referees can make calls based on the rules. With other technologies, like the wireless headphones, people down live at the field are able to communicate with the broadcasters. This will allow viewers to watch an entertaining and informational news about the game.

4)   “The umpires out on the field are in communication via wireless technology with the other umpire”.
  • I find this quote interesting because if you think about, it’s a necessity for umpires to have cordless devices. If they had cords, the could cause harm to the players. Chances are if umpires had cords, they would eventually get disconnected one way or another. Therefore having wireless technology provides lots of advantages for umpires.

  5)  “There are numerous software packages that are designed for fitness and nutrition professionals to organize data and produce reports, ideal for visitors to this site”.
  • Besides sports wise, the article also talked about how there are software packages for fitness. These packages will provide major advantages for people, which is very important. It will help people lose weight as it can provide nutritional benefits so people can learn how to eat properly, workout, and meet their goal.

6)  “The NBA uses replay vision to review ‘last touch’ decisions in the final two minutes of games, and also determines whether players release the ball before the shot clock expires”.
  • I thought that this particular section in the passage showed a specific example of how technology affects sports. It showed the sport and gave an example of the technology which in this case is the replay vision. I could potentially use this quote in my presentation to show how technology has made an impact on sports.
