Soccer Fanatic Insanity

Soccer fans are the craziest fans in the world.

According to the World Bank, an international research and economic organization, shares some insights about soccer.

Q: How do the fans act while they are watching their favorite team play?
A: Soccer fans display disinhibition while watching the game. Soccer fandom is an escape from their everyday life, and they will act with reckless abandon while observing the game whether or not they are at the game, watching it from home or at a bar with other fans. While watching the match, the fans will start to feel “apart of the team” and how the team does affects them personally. They don’t care how others perceive their actions, which makes them act even more ludicrous.

Q: After the match concludes, how do the fans feel?
The emotions of a lunatic sports fan after a game largely depends on whether or not their favorite team won the game. If they did, fans will be overjoyed and and will talk about their team in a “we” frame of mind, such as “We played well” or “I cannot believe we won!” This is called "BIRGing", or Basking in Reflected Glory. The opposite is the case when the team loses. “CORFing” (Cut Off Reflected Failure) is the act of calling the team that lost “them”. An example of this would be “The squad put up a good fight but it was not enough” or “Tough loss for the team, they should have won. I am mad.” Needless to say, a fan will be in a much better state after victory than defeat.

Q:What sort of activities does a fan do in support of the team?
Various fans have various rituals, but many have superstitions. Lots of fans go through the act of painting their face, drinking large amounts of alcohol, dye their hair, paint their chest, make signs, and many other “crazy” actions.

DISCUSSION QUESTION: What is your favorite soccer team? Do you get anywhere near as crazy as some of the actions described?
