Q: How do game-day rituals make you feel closer to the past?

A: Game-day rituals recreate past memories like tailgating or superstitious acts

Your game-day rituals recreate what you have done before, and your memory does the rest.. The  electric game day atmosphere not only excites fans, but brings back past memories and traditions.

Q: What effects does the game day atmosphere have on fans?

A: The nip in the fall air, the smell of the grill and the sea of burnt orange are all reminders that help you to call up memories of games past. The atmosphere at tailgates and sports games with rivalries are electric because of the passion that fans have for their game.

Q:  How are past experiences recalled?

A: Your memory works by calling to mind things that happened the last time you were in a situation like the one you are in now. So the more you use a ritual to re-create something you have experienced before, the more your memory will provide you with other details of the past.

Q: What bonds fans during a rivalry?

A: Cheering together in the stands, wearing team colors and singing college fight songs help to turn fans into family. Sports rivalries help by creating a common and respected competitor that can stimulate support. Also, winning the game bonds them over intensive celebration, while losing the game bonds them over their sorrow.
